What many people don’t understand about the Senate is that, as a House of Review, EACH state has 12 senators (2 if a Territory), NO matter what that state's POPULATION is.
It was NEVER meant to be formed on PARTY lines.
A SENATOR was MEANT to be AN INDEPENDENT; which meant that each BLOCK of senators was meant to see that each state got a FAIR hearing - no matter if it was a huge state with a small population - Qld. - or a small state with a large population such as Victoria.
So the more the smaller parties get into the Senate the better. . .
The more parties there are in parliament the more people have to learn to work together and not squabble like a bunch of holy terrors of kindergarteners....! Hopefully anyway...
Comments
B. C.: That is so true Ingrid, which is why it is a good idea to make your first 5 or 6 votes that of smaller parties then head into the larger ones. They will still get in on the preferences but as you say they may have to be more willing to talk with others to have issues passed.
M. B.: The other thing is that parties get $2.10 of funding at next election for every vote they get.
Ingrid Mary I voted yesterday and forgot that I DON'T have to tick ALL the boxes below the line any more - Yay!
Pity; if I did remember, I would have voted below the line for all the PROGRESSIVE WOMEN first!
Ingrid Mary I voted for 12 parties above the line.
Ingrid Mary: Beware folks, I just read the S*x Party have been thwarting the Greens in Parliament. Huh? THIS I don't understand...
S. M.: $2.10 is actually about $2.50 now smile emoticon:-) (But they need to get more than 4% for it). And this applies to the Lower House too, so if you want to see a smaller party get some election funding, give them your first pref in the Lower House to help push them to 4%. The vote will go to your second pref, but it gives them a chance at still existing next time around).
S. M.: I really like the idea of voting for progressive women first, thanks! I think I'll do that. Or at least, use below the line to reorder the groups above the line.
M. J..: Ingrid Mary regarding NSW Senate: tell me if Michael Osborne (No2) and Jane Oakley (No 3) gets more votes than Lee Rhiannon (No1) , does Jane Oakley have to bow out to Lee Rhiannon? Thanks.
Ingrid Mary If Lee gets 50 or 51? percent of the vote she/he wins OUTRIGHT and NEEDS no preferences. If she doesn't she does, so if I voted GREEN first, Lee second - Lee gets my vote too... That's the best I can do by way of explanation, M J...
Same for the Green too, of course. So if Lee gets 48% and the Green gets 47% the Green still has a slim chance of winning on preferences...
Ingrid Mary MUCH better than first past the post as somebody explained it to me the other day. Say there are 10 candidates and 100 voters for the seat and one gets only 11 votes and the rest get 8 or 9 votes each. 89% of that population is NOT going to feel like voting next time.
At least with our system we get a chance to have a say in second and third, etc. Preferences. We might think they CAN'T all be as bad as the others. . .

L. V.: But some of the smaller parties and independents have terrible policies - make sure you do your research on them.
Ingrid Mary YES.

J. B.: Ingrid Mary - thanks so much for pointing this out. Our politicians should be reminded of this fact, and those who vote on party lines barred from voting perhaps. The equal representation of each state as part of the Nation is inherent in Federation.
B. E.: Depends on where the smaller parties direct their preferences though.. Your vote could flow to someone you do not want in!
J. M.: That's a thing of the past since the senate voting reforms a few months ago. No more group voting tickets.

Happy (belated) Solstice Robert,

Ever heard of “nature’s oobleck?” Watch a father and son play with the unique properties of this Alaskan glacier silt pot, which behaves like non-Newtonian fluid— also known as "oobleck." It's the "closest thing to quicksand" you’ll see in a glacial field!

ECL TRIVIA: What ancient grain has seen a resurgence in popularity due to its high protein and fiber content? (Answer below)

🌊 EU RESTORATION: The EU recently approved a law to restore 20% of land and seas by 2030, with a goal to restore “at least” 90% of "habitats deemed in poor condition" by 2050. Revitalizing habitats, improving water quality, planting at least 3B additional trees by 2030, and boosting biodiversity is the aim of this law— specifically, peatlands and pollinator restoration. Learn more about this new Nature Restoration Law here.

🐱 LYNX RECOVERY: “The greatest recovery of a cat species ever achieved through conservation” was announced this week, as the Iberian Lynx population improved from endangered classification to "vulnerable" with more than 2k mature lynx roaming the wild. The change listing follows "more than 20 years of recovery efforts to save the Iberian lynx, which had only 62 mature individuals by 2001," CBS News reported.

⚒️ CLIMATE CORPS: The American Climate Corps, a new U.S. program based on the New Deal-era "Civilian Conservation Corps," rolled out this week with 9k people deployed to "begin restoring landscapes and erecting solar panels" across the nation. 👶 AUTISM REVERSAL PAPER: My friends at Documenting Hope just published a peer-reviewed paper in the Journal of Personalized Medicine, detailing "the extraordinary reversal of severe Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) symptoms in dizygotic female twin toddlers" with the twins' Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) scores officially down "from 76 to 32 and 43 to 4, respectively, with stability over six months." Read the astonishing summary, the steps the parents used to support their children’s healing, and all the treatment details here. (I personally filmed & interviewed the parents, and documented their hopeful story.)

🧃 BEETROOT JUICE: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover clinical trial published this month shows the powerhouse effects of beetroot juice on post-menopausal women's blood vessel performance and overall cardiovascular health, finding the ruby root's juice to be a "good source of critical nitrate that keeps blood vessels functioning well." Read more here about this small and unique study.

🌾 NO-GLUTEN/ YES-GLYPHOSATE: Did you know ~20M people intentionally avoid gluten in the United States? Now, a new independent study by Moms Across America tested top ‘gluten-free’ packaged foods for glyphosate levels and other pesticides, and the results were not good. "44 out of 46 of the samples came back positive for glyphosate, and out of the 237 pesticides we tested for, glyphosate was the most prevalent," says my friend Zen Honeycutt in the article. Click here to read which foods came back highest— and lowest— in glyphosate levels. Thank you for your important work Zen!

🌤️ Are you light-deficient?
Modern indoor living has led to a lack of photons from the sun’s healing spectrum…and an over-saturation of the disruptive light from LEDS and screens.

To combat this, I’ve been using Red Light Therapy (RLT) for years.

RLT is safe, effective, and clinically proven for a variety of conditions, including:

How to use Red Light Therapy
A large portion of sunlight is in the red to near-infrared therapeutic range, and is concentrated at sunrise or sunset (hence the reddish orange glow).

But – If you’re not viewing sunrise and sunset almost every day…then RLT is the most convenient way to get these benefits.

Most devices require only 10-20 minutes per day, a few times per week!

Relaxing, simple sessions can lead to almost immediate relief from pain, or workout recovery…and more longterm benefits to skin, hair, mood and brain health.

I did an essay on this about 20 years ago. What I discovered was that at the same time as antibiotics were STARTING to save people's lives, thus lowering the age stats, cities had begun to replace slums thus cleaning rubbish and human waste from being dumped into the streets and mold affecting people's lungs. At about this time too people started discovering that the GLUE on the wallpaper backing, which was used prevalently in Victorian times was poisonous!
We also must remember that the early 1900's were the time to that bicycles and cars were becoming popular, thus taking horse s**t off the streets. A different smell still pervaded the same streets (e.g. petrol fumes), but maybe was better for people's health..
And I can't help wondering if male doctors got the upper hand by 1900 due to the fact that in previous three centuries 'hundreds of witches' were burnt at the stake many of whom were the herbalists of their day. As for surgeons they were barbers in previous centuries!
As for Louis Pasteur, the person who popularized the germ theory and the Pasteurization of Milk, well he won a lot of accolades and fortune when he STOLE half the theory of one of his countrymen, Marc Antoine Beauchamp who avowed that germs could NOT kill unless the host (us and other animals as well) 'were in kilter' or 'balance' a supposition that modern doctors, those who are studying our microbiomes and its effects on 21st century rising metabolic diseases (heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, dementia), are just now discovering to be fact.
We can learn to join the dots, folks !

Bob Hawke returned from the remote Northern Territory in 1988 to a divided, partisan parliament. Some say this sank the prospect of a treaty before the idea ever got off the ground.
