When should you see a doctor? 🤔

It’s a common question: “How long should symptoms last before I see a doctor?” While the answer depends on the severity and nature of the issue, here are some general guidelines to help you decide:

Seek immediate attention (ED):
• Severe chest pain or difficulty breathing
• Signs of a stroke
• Severe injuries, bleeding, or sudden severe headaches

Book soon (1–2 Days):
• Fever lasting more than 2–3 days
• Persistent pain or infections
• Worsening chronic conditions

Can wait a few days to a week:
• Minor symptoms or mild infections
• Routine check-ups or non-urgent concerns

When in doubt, it’s best to get checked! Book your appointment today.

As kids get ready to return to school, preschool, kindergarten, or start childcare, now is the perfect time to review their immunisation schedule. Keeping your child’s vaccinations up to date not only protects their health but also ensures your family remains eligible for childcare subsidies and Family Tax Benefit payments.

To assist parents, the National Immunisation Program (NIP) provides free vaccines at specific ages, including:

• 2 months (can be given at 6 weeks)
• 4 months
• 6 months
• 12 months
• 18 months
• 4 years

After age 4, vaccines are typically given through school programs, with catch-up options available from your GP.

Up-to-date immunisations protect against serious diseases like measles, mumps, and polio, keeping your child and the community safe.

To book your child's immunisation appointment, please call the clinic to schedule with a nurse and GP.

Are you turning 25 this year? Did you know that one dose of the HPV vaccine is free for all people aged 12 to 25 years if you missed your chance during school?

Additionally, if you’re 25 or older and have had any type of sexual contact, it’s recommended to have a cervical screening test every five years.

You can choose to do your cervical screening test privately (self-collection) or have a healthcare provider collect the sample for you.

Speak to your GP to book an HPV vaccine or a cervical screening test. If you prefer to self-collect, ask your GP for more information.

With changes to our National Awareness and Screening programs, preventing cervical cancer has never been easier.

💦 With pool season in full swing, it’s the perfect time to brush up on pool safety and CPR skills to keep your loved ones safe.

Pool safety tips:
✅ Always supervise children around water—no exceptions!
✅ Make sure your pool fence and gate are secure and compliant with regulations.
✅ Keep pool areas clear of toys when not in use to avoid temptation.
✅ Teach kids water safety rules like no running near the pool.

In an emergency, knowing CPR could save a life. Consider taking a CPR course or reviewing a first-aid guide. You can read further information here

💧Keeping hydrated is vital for your health, especially during the hot, festive summer months☀️

Dehydration can sneak up on you, so here are some simple tips to stay hydrated:
• Drink water regularly - aim for 8–10 glasses a day, and more if you’re active or outside in the heat.

• Snack on water rich foods - think fruits like watermelon, oranges, or cucumbers.
• Avoid drinking too much caffeine or alcohol - these can dehydrate you.
• Drink ORS (oral rehydration solution) electrolyte drinks - these can help replenish lost salts and minerals, especially after heavy sweating or physical activity.
• Stay cool - wear a hat and seek shade during peak heat times to reduce sweating.

Signs of dehydration include fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, and dark urine. If you experience these symptoms, drink water or an ORS electrolyte drink immediately, and if they persist, consult your GP.

Knowing the signs of testicular cancer helps with early detection, which is essential for effective treatment. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men.

Signs to watch out for:
• Lump or swelling: A small, painless lump on one or both testicles is often the first sign.
• Changes in size or shape: One testicle may appear larger or feel heavier than usual.
• Aching or discomfort: Some people experience a dull ache or sharp pain in the lower abdomen, groin, or testicle.
• Fluid buildup: Sudden fluid buildup in the sc***um can be a warning sign.
• Back pain: In more advanced cases, testicular cancer may cause lower back pain if it spreads.

The best thing you can do is get familiar with your testicles on a regular basis (go on, have a feel). If something doesn’t feel quite right, consult your GP promptly.

Travelling overseas?

As we enter the busy holiday period, did you know it’s recommended to see your doctor at least 6 weeks (preferably 12 weeks) before leaving Australia? This allows your immune system time to respond to any vaccines you might need, and some vaccines require multiple doses.

Protecting your health while travelling is essential to avoid diseases and other conditions. Plan ahead, book an appointment with your GP, and travel with piece of mind.

It’s National Nutrition Week and we’re spotlighting one of this year’s themes ‘A positive relationship with food’.

A positive relationship with food nourishes our mind and body. Food connects and nourishes us socially, culturally, emotionally and physically.

For some people, a positive relationship with food doesn’t always come easily. Developing a healthy, balanced relationship with food often requires time, support, and understanding, whether it's managing food allergies, disordered eating, or simply finding joy in nourishment.

If you think you need some support in navigating your relationship with food, book an appointment with your GP today, they can help guide you toward a healthier, more positive approach to eating.

This week, 5th – 13th October, is Mental Health Awareness Week. Mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or life experience.

If you are experiencing mental health issues, seeking help from your GP is a crucial first step toward recovery. Your GP will assess your situation and provide tailored advice and treatment options. Treatment is individualised, but treating mental health typically involves the following steps.

30/09/2024

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a crucial time to raise awareness about one of the most common cancers affecting women.

Early detection saves lives so check your breasts regularly.

Changes to look for include:
• A new lump or thickening, especially in one breast
• Changes in breast size or shape
• Changes to the ni**le, like crusting, redness, or it turning inward
• Ni**le discharge without squeezing
• Skin changes on the breast, such as redness or dimpling
• Persistent or unusual breast pain

If you notice any of these symptoms, schedule a check-up with your GP. Before your appointment, we recommend talking to your relatives about any family history of the disease.

Women over 40 can have a free mammogram every 2 years and Breast Screen Australia actively invite women aged 50 to 74 to screen.
