Day 5: Amputations 🦾

Amputations can occur in the workplace and are more common in the construction industry. An amputation is the removal of a body part by accident or surgery. Hand amputations are often the result of a traumatic injury or a planned amputation to prevent the spread of a disease.

Following an amputation, replanting the removed part can occur but this is only possible under certain circumstances.

Prevention:
- Use correct fitting protective equipment
- Don’t use machinery that you are not trained on
- Always work with safety guard in place
- Use knives on flat no slip surfaces

Treatment:
Hand therapy can help following surgery or amputation to regain function and reduce pain. Therapy may include mobilisations, strengthen exercises and ultrasound. Hand therapist can also help with adaptive equipment to help you return to activities and complete daily tasks.

Day 4: Distal radius fracture 🦴🩻

A distal radius fracture is a type of broken bone in the forearm close to the wrist joint. These fractures often occur from a fall on an outstretched hand. This sudden force transmitted through the forearm to the wrist can result in a fracture near the wrist joint.

Signs and Symptoms:

- Pain: Immediate onset of pain in the wrist or forearm, exacerbated by movement or palpation
- Swelling and Bruising
- Deformity: Potential visible deformity or misalignment of the wrist
- Limited Mobility: Impaired wrist mobility and difficulty in gripping objects
- Tenderness: Tenderness to palpation over the affected area

Diagnosis:

X-rays are commonly used to confirm the presence of a fracture, determine its location, and assess alignment. In some cases, additional imaging such as CT scans or MRI scans may be ordered to provide more detailed information.

Treatment:

Closed reduction: Closed reduction is a nonsurgical procedure used to realign fractured bones without making an incision into the skin.

Immobilisation: The injured wrist is placed in a splint or cast to keep it still and prevent any additional movement. This helps stabilise the fracture, alleviate pain, and support the healing process.

Surgery: Surgery (internal or external fixations) is often recommended for distal radius fractures that are complex, severely displaced, or unstable.

Hand therapy rehabilitation: Following the healing phase, your hand therapist will design a tailored exercise program aimed at restoring wrist range of motion, flexibility, and strength.

Day 3: Repetitive Strain Injury 👋

Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) are caused by constant use and repetitive motions. These injuries can include damage to the muscles, tendons and or nerves and are particular common in the upper limb.

Who can RSI affect?
RSI is a common injury that can affect anyone from those working desk jobs, picker packers, athletes and everything in between.

Symptoms:
- Pain & Swelling
- Tingling & Numbness
- Stiffness
- Weakness

Prevention:
The best treatment for an RSI type injury is prevention through avoiding overuse. For those working desk jobs, regular breaks and good posture can help. While those in labour intensive roles, including stretching breaks and using both your left and right arms to complete tasks can assist.

Treatment:
A hand therapist can help manage symptoms, suggest modifications and provide strengthening exercises. This can help to heal the injury and reduce the likelihood of it reoccurring.

Day 2: Lacerations 🩸
In construction and other labour jobs lacerations can often occur. Cuts & lacerations are skin wounds that are often caused by sharp objects like knives, glass or sharp edges. Cuts are smaller, neat straight wounds, whereas lacerations are a deeper cut or tear of the skin.

Prevention:
- Use correct fitting protective equipment
- Don’t use machinery that you are not trained on
- Always work with safety guard in place
- Use knives on flat no slip surfaces

Symptoms:
If a cut or laceration occurs, emergency medical attention is required if any of the following occur:
• Bleeding won’t stop
• The cut is deep or large (Can’t push the edges together)
• The cut occurs across or on a joint
For minor cuts it is still important to monitor for signs of infection:
• Pain or redness
• Pus in or around the cut
• Swelling

Therapy:
Depending on the severity of the injury surgery may be required. Hand therapist can assist with you wound & scar management, range of motion & return to work.
Hand therapists are specialists at scar management, and can treat scars across the entire body, not just limited to the upper limb. Therapists at Geelong Hand Therapy can use a variety of techniques to flatten, soften, and desensitise scar tissue as well as increase the mobility of the scar and surrounding tissues.

Day 1: Crush Injuries 🪨

These injuries occur when a part of the hand or upper limb crush in or under a heavy object. Common causes include jamming fingers in a door, objects being dropped or a hand/finger getting crushed in machinery.

Following a crush injury, it is important to have your hand/ finger assessed by a hand therapist to determine that extent of the injury.

Injuries that can occur:
- Laceration of the skin
- Laceration of the nail
- Fracture of the bone
- Partial amputation of the finger

Diagnosis:
If a fracture is suspected an X-rays is commonly used to confirm the presence of a fracture, determine its location, and assess alignment.

Treatment:
Depending in the severity and type of injury, a hand therapist would create a personalised treatment plan. This plan could include splinting, wound care, hands on treatment, mobilisation & exercises.

May Safety Tip – Mandolin Slicers:

Mandolin slicers can be a great tool to use in the kitchen for food prep. They create a quick, uniformed slices of fruit & vegetables perfect for salads, chips & snacks. But with a sharp blade & quick action they can lead to sliced fingers & hand injuries if not used properly.

Tips for Safe use:
• ALWAYS use a guard or handle when slicing
• Tuck your fingers behind the guard
• If the food gets too small to use the guard stop slicing
• Store the mandolin with a cover over the blade & out of reach of children
• Supervise children when using the mandolin
• Use the mandolin on a flat, non-slip surface

If a cut or laceration occurs, emergency medical attention is required if any of the following occur:
- Bleeding won’t stop
- The cut is deep or large (Can’t push the edges together)
- The cut occurs across or on a joint

For minor cuts it is still important to monitor for signs of infection:
- Pain or redness
- Pus in or around the cut
- Swelling

If your hand or fingers are injured it is important to seek treatment as these injuries can require surgery or splinting for the best outcome. Our hand therapist can assess your injury & recommend the best cause of action. If a splint is required, they can fabricate a custom splint to support the injury & help with recovery.
