Short term accommodation is now called short term respite.

We spoke with participants, families and carers about this change. Most told us that short term respite better reflects the value of informal supports and the importance of sustaining these relationships.

We know some people have concerns about the word โ€˜respiteโ€™, but many carers and families use and understand it well. After considering all the feedback, we chose this name because itโ€™s clear and widely recognised.

Short term respite gives you time away from your usual care arrangements, while your primary informal supports take a short break.

Weโ€™ve updated Our Guideline to make it easier for you to understand and use. It explains:

โœ… who can use short term respite

โœ… what it includes

โœ… how it works

โœ… where it can be used.

Sue's advice for other carers is 'when things happen, just take a deep breath. Tomorrowโ€™s a new day.' โ˜€๏ธ

Sue cares for her brother Nick, who has Down syndrome, and her mother who has Parkinsonโ€™s disease. Though she finds these roles rewarding and a privilege, Sue sometimes felt like she had no time for herself, until she joined a local peer support group of other carers.

'I just need someone to listen. And the peer support group does that.'
