KNEES!

Yes we all have them and they do a wonderful job until they don’t.

Recently I put my pair through a huge stress by cycling 310km in New Zealand.

I’m no spring chicken anymore but I’m big on keeping moving, so I knew that doing a big ride would hurt but I was really gobsmacked by how much.

I’ve never suffered knee issues before and so it was a rude shock !

Being an EMMETT Therapist I know the protocols which help with recovery and sure enough I did them to the letter, but, those nobbly buggers would not ease up.

Magnesium is wonderful for fatigued muscles. Cold bath & heated pools helped. Stretching combined with anti-inflammatories and pain relief thrown in to boot.

Still painful and feeling very swollen, my knees felt like they were not mine.

Rather than keep popping tablets I tried something different.

I used my EMMETT knee releases and applied ice behind the knee and on the hamstrings. Nerves sometimes need stimulating elsewhere up the anatomy chain and lo and behold it worked!!

Eureka!!

I love it when I crack the body code to relieve pain & discomfort.

Now I could stretch and I felt releases elsewhere in the calves and thighs. Thank goodness as I’ve still got a bit of sightseeing to finish before I head home.

Why bore you with my troubles? Well it helps others. When you’re in pain it’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole of despair. Know that the body can and will change with the correct stimulation.

Finding that winning combination is important. If one thing doesn’t help, try another, then another then another. Once there’s a reset the body will do its job and start the healing process.

Can’t wait to see my EMMETT Therapist when I get back to make sure it holds and stays strong🥰💪

Day 5. Final Day😢
Kurow to Omaru 82km
Big Day!
A beautiful mix of gravel trails along Lake Waitaki to the Takiroa Rock Art sit then around the Duntroon Wetlands.

Stopped in Duntroon for a chat with some other A2O riders before we headed up some big hills to Elephant Rocks. The rock formations were amazing. Even climbed one 🐘🧗‍♀️ Sat and ate lunch before heading off back up the hill. (Really liking this E-bike)

Rode our way up to Karara creek to the highest point then down to Rakis Raikway Tunnel. The weather turned nasty, freezing rain and really cold wind. We followed the old railway line to Windsor then off road through to Enfield. Brett our ride co-ordinator met us here and we changed over our batteries to race another 13km to Omaru, our finishe line🥰

Once in Omaru we wound our way through their beautiful botanical gardens and down to the waterfront to take photos and celebrate our achievement.

310km was a huge distance for me and I can’t express how emotional I felt having completed it.

About 8years ago I was told about the A2O by a teaching friend and since then I’ve wanted to do it.
Having reached the end I felt elated 🥳

Thank you Pacific Bike Tours🙏Brett & Judy you were amazing🥰

Now for recovery days and exploring Dunedin. New Zealand you are constantly amazing us🥰

Day 4.
Omarama to Kurow. 72km

I thought day 3 was a technical day, but I was wrong.

Day 4’s ride combined smooth flows around Lake Benmore before a continuous steep climb up beside Lake Aviemore. The views from the trail were spectacular and we were cautious of the steep drop offs to the side of us.
Once again we made use of the Merida E-bikes power which helped us power up the rocky Mountain trail.

Sharp switch backs and faux summits provided a nice challenge but we all handled the rugged terrain.
We stopped at a rocky spot for something to energize us on.

A few of us climbed a rocky lookout over the dam. We watched fish, probably trout feed on insects as they landed on the water.

Back on the bikes we continued up Sailors Cuttings along the side of the mountain then headed down along rocky escarpments with tight switchbacks. Not sure I had any teeth left when we reached the carpark at Aviemore Dam.

We crossed it and found a lunch spot to recover and back on the bikes again to ride around Lake Waitaki to Kurow.

It was a massive day ending with flowy hills and a 2km extra to accommodation at Western House, an 1816 Pub/Post Office.
Wasn’t too pleased with the 3am Rooster wake up next day.

We finished the day at the Kurow Pub for one of our crew’s 60th birthday🥳.

This has been epic so far. One day to go.

Day 3. Lake Ohau to Omarama.

Did not expect it to be so challenging and to be honest I was nervous to do this day.

We were warned it’s pretty rough going up the single track with sheer drops to the side of us but nothing quite prepared us for the intense beauty we watched as we climbed to the top.

There were quite a few riders, some on hard tails and others with e-bikes.

We wound our way up the the Omeo range to an elevation of 900 metres.

It was rocky and steep and I was grateful for the power of an e-bike.

Once we reached the top it was a rocky descent on a flowy track to the Omarama Basin. Fast, fun and bumpy 😂😂

There’s a few Mtb riders who inspire me and I could hear their voices in my ears as I faced each challenge and rose to meet it during the day.

It was a day of pushing me out of my comfort zone but I was really pleased with how I rode.

Once we made our way down to Omarama we rewarded ourselves with a 1 1/2 hour soak in the hot water at Omarama Hot Tubs.

What a wonderful group to be riding with💕

This certainly has been an amazing adventure so far.
Tomorrow is as tricky but after managing an intermediate trail I reckon I’ve got this🙌

Day 2 Twizel to Lake Ohau.
Chilly start to the morning. Stopped along the track to pick yellow plums for lunch then off we cycled along canals till we reached Lake Ohau spillway.

We bumped into Jenny & Denise from Kanimbla(Cairns) who’d thunk😄

We have come across so many Aussies riding this route.

The track was flowy and scenic as we wrapped around the weir and the lake till we stopped to have lunch by the water.

The lake reflects the mountains beside it and we even caught a glimpse of snow capped Mt Cook.

Once around the lake we headed out to our accommodation for the night Lake Ohau Lodge.

Quite an historic place where they maintain old time traditions of no tv in rooms, a general fireplace meeting area and a great bar where we played a rousing game of Crowns.

Awesome day!

Day 1 Lake Tekapo to Twizel. 56km of some of the most glorious scenery.

Riding beside Lake Tekapo chanels, past Salmon farms and lunching at the most perfect vista of Lake Putaki.

We all had fun riding down to the lake, some of us reaching speeds of +50kmph, not me!!

We rode along the lake and through some lovely forested parts and into Twizel.

Big thanks to Brett & Judy from Pacific Cycles NZ.

You are amazing🥰🥰

This has been such a special day🥰

Back in Christchurch to meet up with our riding group and explore all this beautiful city has to offer.

From the Avon River walk to Christchurch’s Botanical Gardens. The tram, spectacular wall murals, amazing structures to incredible eateries.

What a superb place.

Off to Lake Tekapo tomorrow in prep for our cycle journey.

Expecting a damp start but hoping for a good change in the weather😉

Best thing to do in Kaikoura?
Hands down its seal watching!🦭🦭🦭

Began our day on a walking track near our accommodation taking us down to a pretty little bay full of seagulls and Kaikoura whaling history.

Next we tramped up a steep incline which rewarded us with stunning views overlooking a seal colony.

Down we traversed an impressive track to the bottom of limestone cliffs to get a closer look of adult and baby seals basking in the sun.

So many tourists I think they outnumbered the seals😉

After four hours of walking and a good 20 thousand steps we stopped for lunch. Tried a famous Kaikoura cray fritter!! Yum!

Another 2km into town and up Tom’s track ( yep another incline😳) and we finally made it back to our digs for an afternoon nap💤

An awesome day exploring nature.

Loved spending such close up time with the seals🦭💕

Couple more days and we start our ride. Bit excited 🥳

You can take the Emmett Therapist away from the job, but the clients will find her, even in New Zealand.
This pretty little Jack Russel is owned by the owners of the Woodbank Cabins we are staying at in Hanmer Springs.
She rocked up this arvo and she stayed for a doggy Emmett. Sweet girl came back for more. Had to shoo her home for her dinner.

Love how dogs respond so quickly to a few moves.

Was lovely to get doggy pats.

The awe moments flowed freely today. Started the day with a walk up the Conica Hill walking track. Once at the top we were rewarded with 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains and township. As we tramped (NZ term) down the hill we came across more fungi & pinecones. What a beautiful place. Ended the afternoon at the Hanmer Thermal pools. Rejuvenating & definitely relaxing. If you get to this part of the world, take time to explore this spectacular region and all it offers.
Back now at our accommodation to partake in a NZ red wine and watch the sheep. Bliss💕🐑🐑🍷

The last couple of days have been a cracker. Landed in the land of the long white cloud, picked up the hire car, trapped down the coast via the windiest road in the middle of a triathlon to finally make it to Little River. Camped up in a giant Silo and headed out to Akoroa to check out some Little Blue Penguins. Managed to clock a big stingray from the jetty and had the craziest drive around the dangerous most steep roads I’ve ever encountered. Thus, has been a phenomenal start of the birthday adventure. This country is truly spectacular💕🐑🐏🐧🪿🪿
