Caring for others starts with caring for yourself.

Healthcare professionals are often the backbone of patient care, but the demands of the role can take a toll. Prioritising your own mental health isn’t a luxury; it’s essential to providing safe, effective, and sustainable care.

🔹 Why it matters:

Burnout affects up to 49% of physicians and 60% of nurses, leading to higher risks of depression, anxiety, and medical error (WHO, 2022).

Untreated mental health concerns can reduce clinical performance and increase the risk of adverse patient outcomes.

Psychologists provide evidence-based support: therapy shows 75–80% effectiveness in reducing symptoms and building coping strategies (APA, 2012).

Even brief interventions — 8–10 sessions — can significantly improve wellbeing and resilience (Beaming Health, 2023).

🔹 The benefits of seeking support:

Improved emotional regulation and stress management.

Increased resilience, preventing burnout and compassion fatigue.

Enhanced ability to focus, problem-solve, and deliver high-quality care.

Stronger professional satisfaction and longevity in your career.

Bottom line: Supporting your mental health is not only good for you, but also for your patients, colleagues, and the healthcare system.

👉 At MINDCHECK HP, we specialise in supporting healthcare professionals and their families. Taking one step towards your own wellbeing today can sustain the care you give tomorrow.

If kindness came in a bottle, it’d be the easiest, and most rewarding, remedy to take. No prescription required.
Kindness releases mood-boosting hormones, lowers stress, and strengthens connection. Better still, it's contagious: one kind act can ripple through your team.
At MINDCHECK HP, we believe small doses of kindness in the workplace build lasting emotional safety and wellbeing.

This week is Loneliness Awareness Week (4–10 August) a time to talk about something many feel but few discuss.

1 in 3 Australians feel lonely.
And for healthcare professionals, the emotional demands of caring for others can increase the risk of feeling isolated, even when surrounded by people.

This year’s theme, “Moments Matter,” reminds us that small, genuine moments of connection can make a big difference. Whether it’s a kind check-in, a shared laugh, or a quiet coffee with someone who gets it, these moments matter.

Loneliness isn’t a weakness. It’s a human experience and one that deserves our attention.

At MINDCHECK HP, we’re here to support healthcare professionals and their families. Because connection, care, and mental health go hand in hand 💙

At MINDCHECK HP, we’re here to support healthcare professionals and their families through every step of the journey, one moment at a time.
Take a moment today to check in with yourself, notice what you need, and give yourself permission to take it one step at a time.

👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️ International Day of Friendship – 30 July 2025

In the world of healthcare, where demands are high and emotional reserves can run low, the friendships we form inside and outside the workplace are more than social bonds, they’re protective factors for our wellbeing.

According to a 2023 systematic review (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9902704/), adult friendships directly enhance key pillars of wellbeing:
🔹 Positive emotions
🔹 Engagement
🔹 Relationships
🔹 Meaning
🔹 Accomplishment
Otherwise known as the PERMA model.

Why this matters for healthcare professionals:
💙Friendships lower burnout risk by reducing stress and increasing feelings of connection and purpose.
💙Social support improves clinical performance, boosts team cohesion, and enhances job satisfaction.
💙Strong relationships can extend your life—comparable to quitting smoking or exercising regularly.

Whether it’s a quick debrief with a colleague between consults, a shared coffee after a shift, or the steady presence of a friend who gets the pressures of your world—it all adds up.

📣 We encourage you to:
👂 Check in on a colleague.
💬 Say the thing you always mean to say: “I appreciate you.”
🤝 Prioritise connection, not just care delivery.

🥗 Good Food = Good Mood (and Better Care)

As health professionals, we know the science, yet it’s easy to overlook our own wellbeing during busy shifts and back-to-back appointments.
Here's your reminder: nearly 90% of serotonin, the hormone that supports mood and emotional regulation, is produced in the gut.
What we eat really does influence how we feel.

Today's lunch lineup at MINDCHECK HP was all about nourishment: veggie-loaded fried rice, hearty homemade soup, and a flavour-packed fish + rice combo.

💙 When we fuel ourselves well, we show up better, for our patients, our colleagues, and ourselves.

📚 Future Doctors: Why Failure Is Part of the Prescription for Success

Medical school is hard. Long hours, steep learning curves, and constant pressure to perform.

But here’s a reminder you probably need today: Failure isn’t your enemy—it’s your teacher.

Psychologist Nigel Barber (Psychology Today) breaks down how setbacks actually help you grow:

🔬 Builds Mental Resilience
Struggling on a test or rotation? Good. You're strengthening your ability to adapt and bounce back—critical traits in medicine.

💡 Boosts Clinical Thinking
Getting things wrong forces, you to think deeper, ask better questions, and sharpen your diagnostic skills. It’s how great physicians are made.

🧠 Develops Emotional Intelligence
Failure teaches humility and empathy—two qualities that make you not just a smart doctor, but a good one.

Remember: Roosevelt, Edison, and even top physicians didn’t succeed despite failure—they succeeded because of it.
So next time something doesn’t go as planned, don’t panic—pause, learn, reach out for support and keep going.

🧠 Mental Health & Burnout Among Australian Optometrists 👓🇦🇺

A recent survey of over 500 practicing Australian optometrists revealed confronting statistics:
💙1 in 3 (30.7%) reported moderate to severe psychological distress
💙Over half experienced high levels of burnout; 56.1% felt emotionally exhausted and 57.1% reported high cynicism
💙Optometrists aged ≤30 was 3.5x more likely to experience psychological distress compared to those over 30
💙Most commonly cited stressors: retail pressure, workload, and career dissatisfaction

Read more here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33877691/

📉 These rates are significantly higher than those seen in the general population and other healthcare professions.

📣 What needs to change?
Workplace modifications, better support for younger clinicians, and resilience-building strategies are vital, not only for optometrists’ wellbeing, but for ensuring quality patient care.

Let’s keep the conversation going and advocate for a healthier future in optometry. 💬💪

🌈 Beyond the Socks: Real Conversations on Doc Mental Health 🩺

June 6 2025 marked Socks for Docs Day, where we all donned colourful socks to show support. But as A/Prof Andrew Tagg shares, awareness is only the first step.

“It’s easy to join in with a colourful pair of socks. It’s harder to say, this was me”.

In his raw and honest reflection, Tagg reminds us:
💙That colleague who always seems “calm and competent” might be carrying more than you can see.
💙Admitting “I need help” isn’t weakness, it’s survival and often shared by others.
💙There’s no neat ending, it’s okay to still be “just here, still doing the work, still sometimes struggling”

Read more here: https://insightplus.mja.com.au/2025/25/beyond-crazy-socks-a-doctors-mental-health-journey/

So, while our crazy socks kickstarted the conversation, let’s keep it going:
✅ Check in – on that “strong friend” you see every shift
✅ Keep listening – even after the sock selfies are tucked away
✅ Create safe spaces – for whispers, not just slogans
Socks spark attention. But words save lives.

If you're a healthcare worker feeling stretched, know you are not alone and it’s okay to ask for help. ❤️
