We totally understand that it can be hard not to fill the silences but pausing is an underrated strategy that we use in Speech Therapy.

Pausing allows for

More processing time: to understand what was said, think of a response and organise the words

Reduces cognitive overload: it helps for children or adults to process one piece of information at a time

Encourages communication by giving the opportunity for the child to have a turn whilst also reducing the pressure of coming up with a quick response

Overall, pausing creates a calmer, more supportive communication environment that helps children process, respond, and participate more confidently.

Parent Tip

Follow your child's lead: let your child choose the game or toy

Model language: describe what they're doing, "you're rolling the car fast!" This may seem silly and your child may not use their mouth words to respond, but you are modelling language that they may eventually use!

Expand: if they say 'car', you can say 'red car' or 'car goes vroom'
