One of the biggest challenges for our adolescent children can be creating good peer opportunities. When they find the right peers or small social group it can really help! Here are some useful tips.
1. Help them start with one peer then build it up to small groups of 2 to 4 peers. This can really help when learning to navigate social skills in play themes and high level skills such as problem solving, creativity, sharing and win/lose situations. It provides opporuntities with multiple dynamics but not too many so as to avoid overwhelm.
2. Role play different ways to problem solve solutions at home before engaging in activities.
3. Have a plan when feelings take over so your child feels supported in the moment but also builds their own self-reglation skills with their peers.
4. Provide opportunities of interest in sporting activities or community social events to help foster meeting like minded friends.

Explore & Soar has been a registered NDIS provider since 2018 and every 3 years we go through a re-registration process. This means external auditors review all of our policies, procedures and everyday activities to ensure that we are meeting NDIS standards. They also check that these policies and procedures fall in line with our registering body, AHPRA. These auditors will be with us for the next 2 days and they will be doing some informal interviews with our staff, as well as some of our NDIS clients. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us on 0477 708 217!

Pretend Play builds the foundations for all social skills. Using pretend play to act out social situations is great at this age.
1. Play through real life experiences and routines such as pretend play with dolls, bears etc eating dinner and bathing.
2. Take toys or dolls on adventures such as to the park and play on the equipment together.
3. Play with other children at the park: narrate the play or support a positive experince in play at the park, such as 'oo your friend is about to go down the slide, waiting', 'yay now it's your turn to go down the slide.'
4. Play dress ups.
5. Use puppets to play or tell stories.
6. Play different games like Simon says, musical statues, or hide and seek.

At Explore and Soar, we continue to value educating and supporting the next generation of OT's entering into the workforce. We have had the honour of teaching Emma, a fourth year Occupational Therapist from CSU, in the world of Peadiatrics in our local communities. Emma has loved working along side Maddie and our clients, running sessions on her own, as well as developing some special social Group Programs you will get to see during the upcoming July school holidays. Emma is nearing the end of her placement and will be finishing with us on 27th June, we have loved having her with us! We wish you all the best on finishing your degree and entering into the world of OT in 2026!

We all have our own unique way of coping, especially in busy, large and unpredictable environments. As adults, how we cope each day can be different, as is the same with our children. Here are some go to strategies that we can use to help keep our kids regualted when we're out in the community.
1. Assign roles: give your child a role to help you complete the tasks that you need to do. Chief ticker off the list is a great one.
2. Timing: book appointemtns when you know you have plenty of timing and warning, working with naps and daily energy of each child.
3. Snacks: snacks are the best for those hungry moments, and don't forget a drink too!
4. Games & Activities: take some easy quick games whether they are card games, spot it, eye spy, count the trucks out the window, anything to help engage in an activity without always needing the pressure of conversations.
