It’s been a tough few years for early and struggling readers with the interruption of schooling due to the pandemic. I’m seeing this so much more in my speech pathology practice.

Literacy is a fascinating field to delve into with an abundance of robust research to add to the science of reading. This article sheds more light on the link between fluency and comprehension - two key elements of literacy learning.

Fluency is an essential component of early reading instruction because of its strong relationship with reading comprehension.

As adults we can sometimes be a little quick to make judgements on children’s behaviour without taking the time to understand underlying reasons. This is a really good reminder to look beyond the ‘outward appearance’ 🤍

Phonic playing cards are super fun and versatile to use in reading and spelling intervention. A few ways I use them:

💚 sorting words with the same vowel sound into the different ways the sound can be spelled; and reading each word as it’s categorised.
💚 playing card games like Memory, Whats Missing, Snap, Go Fish and reading each word as cards are played.
💚 writing words to dictation then self checking when the card is turned.
💚sentence generation with a chosen card, then writing it down.

A great way to increase practice repetition and create a motivating learning environment!

Framed and hung these super cool anatomy drawings in my clinic room this week. Not only are they great visuals but I love how they highlight the ‘science’ in everything we do in intervention.

Two years ago this little kiddy had no language. To hear him sing in our session last week, made my heart sing.
As speechies we have the wonderful privilege of helping change children and families lives, but I tell you what, they have certainly changed mine
