For many with EDS/HSD, the nervous system is deeply affected. Beyond joint pain and hypermobility, serious neurological issues can develop for some which are often misunderstood or misdiagnosed:
โข Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Leaks โ causing positional headaches, brain fog, and neck pain.
โข Chiari Malformations โ a group of disorders where brain tissue herniates into the spinal canal (>5mm), leading to pressure, dizziness, and coordination issues.
โข Craniocervical Instability (CCI) โ unstable joints the the neck/spine can compress the brainstem, causing a range of debilitating symptoms this can include AAI and segmental spinal instabilities
โข Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) โ increased pressure in the skull without a clear cause, leading to vision problems and chronic headaches
โข Tethered Cord Syndrome โ spinal cord tension can affect bladder, mobility, and cause leg weakness. most cases related to EDS are โoccultโ.
โข Kyphosis โ a combination of abnormal spinal curvature and rounding, can occur in certain types of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, leading to chronic pain, respiratory issues, and reduced mobility.
โข Tarlov Cysts โ fluid-filled sacs along nerve rootsโcan occur in individuals with EDS/HSD and may contribute to pain and nerve-related symptoms.
