The silent treatment can be extremely painful, especially if experienced in childhood by a parent figure. This sends a message to a child that when they do something “bad” or “wrong” they no longer exist. Their need for connection doesn’t matter. And, it instills a conditional form of love.

The truth is, most people who engage in “silent treatment” are doing this because they are emotionally immature mature + unable to express their feelings. Often, they don’t even see this as a form of abuse. For them, it’s a way to keep themselves safe. To control the situation. And it often comes from those who easily (+ quickly) get into a shutdown nervous system state.

There’s a difference between the silent treatment + taking space. When a person takes space it’s communicated: “hey I’m feeling super overwhelmed right now + may say something I don’t even mean. I’m going to need to take a break + return to this conversation (tonight, tomorrow, in an hour etc.)”

Silent treatment has a withdraw of love aspect to to it. It feels punishing. It feels scary. And, ultimately it brings up lots of intense emotions around abandonment.

Let’s talk about it: What’s YOUR experience with the silent treatment? What emotions does it bring up in you?

What a week it has been!

Flooding in our region has resulted in so much devastation and I'm grateful to live in a community that continues to support each other through this difficult time.

Amongst the chaos, I have managed to move offices and will now be located at 73 Channon Street. I'm very excited for all my wonderful clients to see the new space!

As Christmas fast approaches, it is important to look after our mental health. For some, this busy period can be overwhelming and we may also be mourning loved ones that are no longer with us. Be kind to yourself and connect with others that lift your spirits.

After today, I will be taking some time out over Christmas and look forward to seeing all my wonderful clients in the new year! Merry Christmas
