What’s Really Happening in the Sauna, Minute by Minute

Your body isn’t just sweating. It’s experiencing controlled heat stress that activates powerful biological responses, from cardiovascular shifts to cellular repair.

In the first few minutes, your brain detects heat and signals your heart to speed up. Blood vessels expand, circulation improves, and your core temp starts to rise.

By minute four, skin blood flow increases and sweat begins. You shift into a parasympathetic state and endorphins kick in.

Around the 10-minute mark, heat shock proteins activate. These help repair damaged cells, reduce inflammation, and support mitochondria, which are key for energy and longevity.

From minutes 13 to 16, hormones shift. Growth hormone rises, insulin sensitivity improves, and inflammation begins to drop.

Consistency is key because your body adapts to repeated heat exposure, making each session more effective at improving resilience, recovery, and long-term health.

Why 20 Minutes in the Sauna Lowers Cortisol

When you sit in a sauna, your body experiences passive heat stress. In response, your sympathetic nervous system initially ramps up, but over time, your parasympathetic system, your “rest and digest” mode, takes over, leading to a calming, restorative effect.

Research shows that regular sauna use can lower levels of cortisol, the primary stress hormone. One study found that sauna bathing significantly reduced cortisol in participants after just a single session. The heat promotes muscle relaxation, increases circulation, and triggers endorphin release, all of which support a reduction in chronic stress.

𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐞 – 𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐨 𝐌𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞

Yesterday I had an appointment with an incredible naturopath, Cait, .thenaturopath located above in the space, so I could get on top of a lingering cough that’s been hanging around since I was sick about a month ago. But it wasn’t just about the cough — it was about checking in on a few little things that I could feel were impacting my performance and overall well-being.

It really got me thinking about how often we accept mediocre as normal — whether it’s in our training, our nutrition, our health, or even our sleep. We chase average because it’s common. We put up with feeling ‘okay’ because we think that’s all there is.

But the truth is: 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓪𝓻𝓮 𝓬𝓪𝓹𝓪𝓫𝓵𝓮 𝓸𝓯 𝓼𝓸 𝓶𝓾𝓬𝓱 𝓶𝓸𝓻𝓮.

When we stop accepting mediocre, we unlock an entirely new level of health, energy, and potential that most people don’t even realize they have access to.

I’m so grateful that over the past couple of years, I found an amazing, holistic doctor who doesn’t just look at blood test results and say, “Yep, you’re within the normal range.” He chases 𝓸𝓹𝓽𝓲𝓶𝓪𝓵. And because of that approach, I’m proud to say my bloodwork consistently reflects a body performing at its best — not just scraping through the minimums.

The appointment with Cait yesterday was another layer of that journey. She didn’t just look at what’s happening 𝓻𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓷𝓸𝔀 — she looked at the bigger picture. We talked about immediate support, but we also laid out a path toward long-term improvements and peak performance.
