Wounds

Imagine that that you have wounds all over your body, and that everyone in the world has wounds all over their body, and that every time you accidentally make contact with someone’s wounds, or they make contact with your wound, it hurts. This is an explanation found in the Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz (a Toltec spiritual teacher) on how emotional wounds get triggered.

We all have emotional wounds. They could stem from your youth or
maybe you believe in reincarnation, and they are wounds from another lifetime, or if you believe that just as your grandmother’s nose sits on your face through her DNA, so too does her insecurity live in your body…whatever the source, we all have emotional wounds.

Unfortunately because the wounds are not visible, it’s very hard to be mindful of not triggering another person’s wounds. If this is someone we encounter regularly, then we might develop tact around that wound.

When we see triggers from this place of perception it also helps us not to get entrenched in a battle, because we won’t take this person’s reaction personally. We notice that their reaction has nothing to with us, even though it seems like it is aimed at us. We can only hope or pray that this person realises they have the wound and that they will seek help. Their wounds, Their journey.

Obviously if it affecting our safety (whether mental or physical), then we need to take action to protect ourselves, this could mean moving away from the situation or having a discussion etc

For our own wounds, it is awareness that brings about healing. When you become aware that you have been triggered (you might notice the change in thoughts and the disruption of your peace), and from there you can begin the work of healing. The wound gives you a place to begin.

This Vessel

About 3 years ago I had a diagnosis of “abnormal cells”. I remember being really shocked. At the time I was working through some big issues from my past. My logic at the time, believe it or not, was: But I’m doing so much spiritual cleansing, how can my body not be benefiting. However I wasnt eating healthy, I wasn’t doing any exercise and I didn’t have a routine bed time. At the time I still didn’t understand the value of rest, and I still saw
life as only a culmination of achievement, so productivity matters.

I believe my body was benefiting from the spiritual work. After all, the body holds the score when it comes to signs of mental, physical and emotional fatigue. However, having the logic I had at the time was like saying: I hope to win the lotto tomorrow but not buying a ticket or praying “God please help me in my exams” and not studying. You cannot collaborate with the energies that be, without putting your own best foot forward.

So..this body even with all the wisdom it generates is still but the vessel. And so yes it works best when nurtured: We still need to look after the physical aspect. We all know by experience the result of not nurturing the body. Without the body, there is no human experience. And why not have a good quality of life if this is in your control.

In Light on Life, Iyengar says in Chapter 2: If you abandon or over indulge the body you can create illness and or attachment, and this wonderful vehicle becomes a burden. “Abandon” is quite a harsh word, but in truth we do abandon the body when we don’t nurture it.

To happy healthy bodies 🙏🏼

Foundation

Every time I think I’ve mastered something, another curveball will be thrown my way, leading me to the conclusion that there is no mastery, only reflection and learning to be had.

The peace actually comes from the acceptance that nothing is permanent and basically we do have to “roll with the punches”, while holding onto our own secure foundation. Thus the importance of building a strong and unwavering foundation.

We all have the opportunity to create that strength through discipline to a path, a conscious decision. This could take the form of a daily gratitude journal, to pray at a certain time every day, to meditate daily, to attend regular meetings at your place of worship, to make a practice of walking in nature etc.

When we stand in Tadasana (mountain pose) with our feet firmly planted on the ground, visualising that they are rooted into the earth like a tree, we start to create a knowing that we are fully supported.

Knowing your own strength whether in times of crisis or not, is invaluable. 🙏🏼

Worry

Anxiety and I have lived together for a long time. The mind can conjure up all sorts of images and thoughts, and take us away to experiences that are far from reality. The what ifs.

This worrying and dreading (fear) in the mind causes the body to experience physical changes. In your body it might show up as pain in the belly, constricting of the throat, a faster heart beat, sweaty palms etc: the mind- body connection. Even though nothing has actually happened yet, the body can perceives the thoughts of the mind as reality.

So what can we do to still the mind and be present in the here and now? One of the simplest but a very profound form of being present is to focus on our breath: noticing the in breath, noticing the out breath. However as simple as this sounds, there are a few steps involved.

Often we will hear people talking about pausing…in the past, that word “pause” has not been helpful to me- as if suspended in time. It has taken me a huge part of this lifetime to learn to pause.

In my own personal experience, it is awareness and then recognition that can bring about the pausing. Say for instance I am in a state of worry, I become aware that I am in a state of worry, I recognise this experience, and then from there I take out “my breathing tool” from my toolbox, and I breathe.

As we practice these steps, they will become a new pattern, and eventually our norm, perhaps eventually skipping the worry altogether😊, being at peace.

Sadhguru talks about not taking oneself so seriously. Echart Tolle talks about stilling the voice that is constantly in the head. Byron Katie talks about living in reality. They are all saying the same thing: be present (at one with your breath); and if you are religious this could mean “at one with your Creator”.
