♿ NAVIGATING THE NDIS ♿
WA lawyer Tom Monks, who lost both his legs in an accident when he was two years old, says while getting accepted for NDIS funding was straightforward, getting money for the things he needs has been a struggle.

"For most of last year, due to COVID, I wasn't able to spend my money for therapies," Mr Monks told ABC Perth's Mornings host Nadia Mitsopoulos at a specially-convened forum to discuss the NDIS on Wednesday.

"At this year's review they used that against me, saying 'you didn't spend the money so we will take some away from you'."

A wheelchair user, Mr Monks relies on accessible taxis for transport and said he used to get a $70-a-week mobility allowance to help meet the cost.

"They took that away from me, saying that my wife can take up the slack," he said.

"They also took away what is a reasonable amount to fix my wheelchair."

Requests for funding for physiotherapy and pain management were also knocked back.

Mr Monks submitted an application for a review, but said the entire process had left him feeling angry and disempowered.

"It has taken me three months to get the reports to substantiate that I have no legs. It has taken me an exhaustive amount of time," he said.

He said the support he was asking for would help him to keep working full-time, support his family and contribute to society, and if he could not work he would be reliant on the JobSeeker allowance.

"I'm not eligible for the disability support pension, [they told me] I'm not disabled enough," he said.

"I got questioned if my amputation was permanent by Centrelink staff at one stage."

Other participants our special forum told us navigating the NDIS was an 'exhausting and disempowering process'.

My vulnerable clients are expressing growing concerns again in regards to how they feel about the threat of the Covid Virus and the threat of the virus upon their care needs. On top of my Covid Training Module and my past experience in Infection Control in the Queensland Health System, in regards to the latest virus I am happy to wear appropriate masks, gloves and practice extra precautions requested by any client.
I realise this is a firey subject by all means and that these clients and myself are not even in a Covid hot spot or lock down zone. But...
I believe in offering 'wholestic' care and this includes addressing and reducing every individual clients triggers of anxiety. A threat to our health brings all of us a degree of anxiety. I also have an understanding that some workers and clients for the very same reasons (anxiety, discomfort, belief systems...) simply cannot wear a mask. Therefore I am practicing every infection control measure that 'I' can to keep my clients safe and wearing whatever hat I see necessary to implementing that. We are all still learning to live this ever changing Covid life. I'm sure we will continue to adapt and overcome the Covid affliction, while finding understanding for our individual and common challenges.
