As a massage therapist, I often get asked about whether it's best to eat before or after a relaxation massage. The answer is that it's generally best to avoid eating a large meal right before a massage, as it can make you feel uncomfortable and bloated during the treatment. However, it's also important to not come to your massage feeling overly hungry or malnourished. So what should you eat before and after a massage?
Before your massage, aim to have a light, balanced meal that includes healthy carbohydrates, protein, and fats. This could be something like a salad with grilled chicken or fish, or a bowl of whole-grain pasta with vegetables and a small amount of lean protein. Avoid heavy or greasy foods, as well as caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you and make you feel more tense.
After your massage, it's important to replenish your body with nutrients and hydration. Drinking plenty of water is key, as massage can increase circulation and fluid movement in the body. It's also a good idea to have a small, healthy snack within an hour or so after your massage to help your body refuel and recover. Some good options include fruit, nuts, or a smoothie with protein powder.
Remember, every person's body is unique, so it's important to listen to your own needs and preferences when it comes to eating before and after a massage. If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to discuss them with me before your appointment.
