International Day of Play - 11th June 2024

This one deserves a spot on the feed today and everyday! To be playful, to have the space, resources and toys to play is a vital and integral part of a child's wellbeing, growth, learning and communication.

This campaign has been called upon and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, through a network of organisations, initiated by the LEGO Foundation and the LEGO Group for that very reason, to ensure safe play spaces for all πŸ’™πŸ’œπŸ©·πŸ’›

The beautiful spring sun today coming through my office window 🌼

It made me want to capture this feeling as I reflected on a number of changes and experiences for my practice and for myself:
✨ I have over 1k people now following along on my practice journey and wanted to show my face and introduce myself again, thank you for being here 🫢🏼
✨ I have a new room space! It will be shown in time on here, however this has allowed for further organisation of my resources and also a space for parents and carers to come and feel comfortable 🩡
✨ I have been supporting two emerging play therapy students in their first field placements which has been absolutely rewarding
✨ I have had some therapeutic endings recently, but also some therapy breaks throughout this week because…
✨ I am going on a family holiday for 4 weeks to Canada this Saturday!
✨ I recently got engaged to my long term partner, now fiancé ❀️
To say that there is a lot going on is an understatement!
Time to reflect is an important thing and this spring sun helped me do that today.
To stop for a moment, to process all of this, even if it is so much to be grateful for! There is also time to experience all the feelings too that come with so much happening 🌼🩡

Happy National Play Therapy Day! πŸŽ‰πŸ§Έ
What an amazing way to celebrate. A week ago I was on my way home from the Darwin Play Therapy conference where fellow play therapists, students currently learning all things play and other professionals interested in the philosophy of play gathered together.
It was an absolute pleasure learning from Dr. Richard Gaskill and finally being reunited with Jo, Brandy and Yael who I met and learnt from while still studying in Fiji at a conference 5 years ago πŸ₯°β˜€οΈβœˆοΈ

It's been a while πŸ’œ
A really important topic that's been coming up lately for children is this concept of 'negative self-talk', how a child perceives themselves and therefore how their self-esteem and also their identity of who they are, is affected.

The feeling of shame can have long term effects on children. Trying to shift our perception and thinking of the child's 'behaviour' as separate to who they are as a person such as 'the choice you made hurt others, you are not a bad person'.

Today is a first for PTC, my first IWD as a business owner in my local community. I could not feel more fortunate for all of my supports around me that continue to build me up, encourage and celebrate PTC and the work that we do πŸ’œ πŸ’œ
Today is the day to celebrate these achievements and raise awareness of discrimination.
Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all .

πŸŽ‰βœ¨ Happy International Play Therapy Week! I hope all of my fellow play therapists and emerging students out there have taken some time for themselves this week in some way. βœ¨πŸŽ‰

As you can see it is nearing the end of the week, I always had a plan to share this at the beginning. Having had some hurdles this week as a business owner goes to show, we are all human, we all learn from experiences and at times we do need to put some things on hold to be able to manage what we can in our day or in our week. πŸ’™πŸ’™

πŸ“šπŸ’™ The beginning of a new school year, or the very beginning of school for our little ones come with lots of emotions and responses!

No doubt over the past week, there have been many feelings and thoughts going through not a child's mind, but for parents/carers too.

The β€˜3 R’s’ by Dr. Bruce Perry is a helpful tool to remind us of the most important thing we can do for children, is to connect through our relationship and β€˜being with’ them. This allows a child to feel heard and listened to in their feelings.

This model shows the benefits of a β€˜bottom up’ approach of a child's brain development. The most critical aspect for a child is relationship, connecting with another first, to then be able to think and problem solve when they are able to regulate and feel heard.

An example: "I can see you're upset, let's go outside and throw the ball" After some time, "I could see you were upset inside, but the ball is for throwing outside, let's problem solve together on why you were feeling upset". πŸ“šπŸ’™

Hello! I wanted to introduce myself again on this page for all the new followers and visitors that I am so grateful for πŸ’—
I'm Sheridan and I am a registered play therapist located in the Ballarat and Golden Plains Region. I support and meet a child where they are at in regards to their developmental age and their ability. I am very passionate in supporting children and their families and it is a privilege to be a part of their journey.
I am so thankful for the support system I have and could not be doing what I am today without them.
I started my small clinic part time this year and have supported up to ten families over time and look forward to more of this next year with my increased practice hours.
I hope that you all can enjoy time with your loved ones to bring in the new year.
✨✨
