Anyone get stuck into a Christmas ham like this yesterday? Our lucky trainer Jacqui was treated to this particular one (maple, orange, cinnamon, clove & mustard glaze 🤤).

There are plenty of options to help you use up those leftover hams, chickens or turkeys! Some of our favourites include;
🫛 Pea and ham soup
🥪 Sandwiches and wraps
🥗 Ham/chicken/turkey and barley salad
🍝 Pesto pasta with ham/chicken/turkey
🥚 Ham and zucchini slice/fritters

Let’s do some quick maths. Say you have 6 Christmas parties throughout December;

3 meals per day x 31 days in December = 93 meals
(6 Christmas parties / 93 meals) x100 = 6.5%

As we can see, the food we eat at Christmas parties only makes up a small proportion of our intake for the entire month (6.5% to be exact). If we keep it this way, it’s unlikely to have a huge impact on any long-term health or fitness goals.

However, having an all-or-nothing mindset and allowing these events to spill over into the following days/weeks is certainly where we may start to notice a difference.

Enjoy the events while you’re at them. Accept the fact that you’ll probably overeat (and there’s nothing wrong with doing so occasionally). Move on and go back to your normal eating habits afterwards - see how it makes you feel!

Adequate fluid intake is an essential piece of the puzzle when it comes to our health & wellbeing. Water accounts for 50-80% of our body weight, and is required for many of the body’s processes, including digestion & absorption of nutrients, elimination of waste products in urine, and regulation of body temperature.

It is recommended that we drink 2-2.5L of fluids per day to maintain hydration. The easiest way to check whether you are hydrated or not is to look at the colour of your urine - a pale straw colour is what we are aiming for.

🥑 HEALTHY FATS 🥑

There are two main types of fats - saturated and unsaturated.

Unsaturated fats are an essential part of our diet. When they replace saturated fats in the diet, they help to reduce the risk of heart disease and lower total cholesterol levels. Plus, some nutrients are fat-soluble, meaning they can’t be properly absorbed if they’re not consumed alongside some healthy fats.

Unsaturated fats are found in fish (particularly oily fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines), olive/canola/safflower oil, avocado, as well as nuts & seeds.

Try adding more unsaturated fats into your diet by cooking with olive oil, sprinkling nuts & seeds over your breakfast, adding avocado to your salads or having oily fish a couple of times a week!

🍞 WHOLEGRAIN CARBODYDRATES 🍞

Without a doubt, carbohydrates are the most demonised nutrient in diet culture. At 3SIX5 Team Training, we are friends with carbs, and here’s why;

🥔 Body’s preferred source of energy during intense exercise
🍞 Excellent source of fibre (for digestive health and overall wellbeing) and B-group vitamins (for energy production)
🌽 May help lower total cholesterol and LDL levels
🥯 May help reduce risk of stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer
🍠 Helps preserve lean muscle mass

Aim to fill 1/4 of your plate at most meals with whole grain carbohydrates (e.g. bread, rice, pasta, noodles, cereals, crackers) or starchy vegetables (e.g. potato, sweet potato, corn) to reap the benefits! And remember, the browner, the better!
