Itโ€™s a common belief that you should โ€œrest until the pain goes away,โ€ but long periods of rest can actually make back pain worse. Muscles stiffen, joints become less mobile, and the longer you avoid movement, the harder it becomes to get going again.

Gentle, controlled movement is one of the most effective ways to reduce back pain. Simple things like short walks, light stretching, mobility work, and core activation help improve circulation, loosen tight muscles, and calm the nervous system โ€” all crucial for healing.

So what should you do?

Start with movements that feel safe and comfortable. Mild stiffness is normal, but avoid anything that causes sharp or increasing pain. If you notice symptoms like numbness, tingling, or pain down the leg, itโ€™s a sign you should get assessed.
