Mount Kosciuszko - the highest mountain in Oz. We were expecting warm weather - sunhat, sunscreen + sunnies were packed 😎. What we got was fog, rain + 70kmh winds 🥶 💨
🚶‍♀️
The route was 18k there + back. I was nervous because I haven't walked that distance in a very long time. My son suggested we take the more interesting route of 24k. At first I said 'no way!'.
Finally, I reluctantly agreed but became even more nervous.
🚶‍♀️
I wanted to get out of my comfort zone but I thought I wouldn't be able to do it. I had a panic attack + got a bad pain in my gut (gut-brain connection) 🥺 but I had to finish.
🚶‍♀️
What I learnt is that I can do more than I think, to push myself out of my comfort zone + to have more confidence in myself.
🚶‍♀️
Stepping outside of our comfort zone encourages us to grow, learn, build confidence + increase resilience.
🚶‍♀️
Thank you to my son who pushed me. I wouldn't have done it on my own. I would have taken the easy route.

The gut–brain axis is a powerful communication pathway, and when the gut is inflamed, imbalanced or struggling with dysbiosis, it can worsen inattention, mood instability, impulsivity and fatigue.

Many adults with ADHD also experience gut symptoms like bloating, constipation, diarrhoea or food cravings without realising how interconnected these systems are. When we support the gut, we support the brain.

If you’ve been wondering whether your gut health is playing a role in how you feel, function and focus, you’re not imagining it, the research strongly supports this connection.

Did you know your gut may play a bigger role in ADHD symptoms than you think?

Most people see ADHD as a brain-only condition… but the gut and brain are constantly talking to each other. When that communication gets disrupted, it can lead to more emotional overwhelm, anxiety, low mood, fatigue and trouble concentrating.

Your gut produces key neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, both commonly low in adults with ADHD. So when the gut is inflamed, imbalanced or “leaky,” it sends stress signals straight to the brain, intensifying symptoms.

Food sensitivities, dysbiosis, low digestive enzymes, nutrient deficiencies and even gluten or dairy reactions can all impact the gut–brain axis. The good news? When you support gut health, focus improves, emotional regulation becomes easier and energy stabilises.

If you're struggling with gut symptoms and ADHD-like traits, it's worth exploring what's really happening beneath the surface. A personalised gut approach can make a world of difference.

Heavy metals have the ability to cross the blood–brain barrier, which means they can directly influence mood, memory, focus and overall mental wellbeing. Metals like lead and mercury can interfere with neurotransmitters, impact melatonin production and create oxidative stress that affects emotional balance and cognitive clarity.

This can show up as trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, irritability, anxiety, sleep issues or feeling constantly overwhelmed. Many people assume it’s burnout, but sometimes the issue sits much deeper, at a biochemical level.

Supporting your natural detox pathways through nutrient-rich whole foods, antioxidants, good sleep and stress reduction helps your body clear toxins more efficiently. For those wanting answers, heavy metal testing such as HTMA offers a deeper look into your mineral balance and potential toxic load.

Most people think of toxins as processed foods or pollution, but some of the most harmful ones are the heavy metals we’re exposed to every day, mercury from large fish, pesticide residue on produce, chemicals in cosmetics, old pipes, cleaning products and even air pollution. These metals can gradually build up in the body, triggering inflammation, disrupting detox pathways and affecting organs like the liver, kidneys and brain.

Common signs of heavy metal overload include fatigue, brain fog, low mood, digestive issues, poor immunity and unexplained skin or sleep problems. Because the symptoms overlap with many other conditions, they’re often missed or dismissed.

Small changes like filtering your water, reducing high-mercury fish, choosing non-toxic products and supporting your liver and gut with colourful vegetables, garlic, coriander and fibre can make a real difference. And if you suspect deeper toxicity, a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis can provide clarity on what’s really going on internally.

Did you know a clean, green, superfood-packed diet can actually trigger more bloating, pain and gut inflammation, if your gut isn’t ready for it?

One of my clients came to me eating kale salads every day, avoiding sugar, gluten and processed foods… but still felt terrible after every meal.
On paper her diet looked perfect.
Inside her gut? Not so much.

Raw kale, cabbage and nuts are full of insoluble fibre and oxalates. Great for a healthy gut, but like sandpaper to an inflamed one. Her Microbiome Explorer test showed low levels of the bacteria that break down oxalates and signs of an irritated gut lining.

Once we swapped the raw salads for soothing cooked veggies like pumpkin, zucchini and roasted carrots, her bloating and pain eased within weeks.

Healthy eating isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your gut needs what supports it today, not what looks healthy on Instagram.

Did you know that raw greens, green smoothies and high-fibre meals can worsen gut symptoms if your digestion is already inflamed?

Many people push harder with “healthy” foods when their gut feels off—more salads, more raw veggies, more nuts.

But if your gut lining is irritated or your beneficial bacteria are low, those foods can create more chaos than nourishment.

Cooked, easy-to-digest foods like steamed zucchini, pumpkin, roasted carrots and peeled sweet potato can soothe the gut, reduce inflammation and support good bacteria, without overwhelming your digestion.

Healing begins when you feed your gut what it can handle, not what you think it “should” handle.

👉 If you’re confused about what your gut actually needs, join the Healthy Habits Program for personalised support and gut-healing guidance.

My Story

I’m Sal Prothero, founder of Whole Food Nutrition, passionate about food and what it can do to the body and mind.

It hasn’t always been like that. I was burnt out, depressed and had gut problems. I had no idea that what I ate and drank was having an effect on me. I craved carbohydrates and sugar and couldn’t imagine my life without them. Something had to change so I slowly cut back on the carbohydrates and sugar and started eating a whole food diet.

Fast forward to now – I feel like a different person, I have a BHSc in Nutritional Medicine and I am passionate about improving clients’ health. I am also a Wife and Mum of 2. My way of eating is not a diet, it’s a way of eating for life. I believe in the 80/20 rule. Eat healthily most of the time and have those treats occasionally. There are some exceptions though such as healing the gut and chronic health conditions where a specific diet is adhered to
