From the learnings and writings of .james.au who beautifully mentored me in the early stages of my business, I wrote the headlines for the 7 chapters of my life story late last year. I've even drafted a few chapters!
๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ
It's a profound way to 'see' your life so far, the influences, the hiccups, the joys, and that your story is still being written. 'Retirement' could be really beige ๐Ÿ˜ฒ yet it's a profound, powerful shift, one that I'm still unpacking, discovering.

If you deliberately do hard things even when you donโ€™t feel like it you activate circuits for motivation, resilience, and neuroplasticity. This is how your brain stays adaptable and young.
๐Ÿง
Research shows that consistently facing challenges or discomfort boosts brain development, cognitive function, and mental resilience. The anterior mid-cingulate cortex grows when you tackle difficult non-habitual tasks.
๐Ÿง
Yoga doesnโ€™t reduce pain. It changes how you relate to it. Experienced practitioners tolerate it more than twice as long and their interoception grows with years of practice, seen in a larger insular cortex.
๐Ÿง
Instead of avoiding discomfort they focus on the breath, stay with the sensation, and observe without reacting. Their nervous system learns that discomfort is survivable.
๐Ÿง
Not less pain. More capacity. Not control. Presence.
๐Ÿง
Do hard things. Stay with them. Watch your brain rewire.

Learning from the life stories of these masters of yogic wisdom - honest, wise, practical, insightful - continues to provide me with steady support and guidance to be a better person in the world, in spite of often unhelpful thoughts and beliefs that get in the way!

Beyond thinking that we have it all together how can we be more present without needing to look good, stay in our life situation and have fun?!

๐Ÿ˜‰ bravely sharing my retirement writings...

Dear first yoga mat
๐ŸงŽโ€โ™€๏ธ
How I love thee, first yoga mat. Of course youโ€™re my favourite yoga colour, purple, not too thin, not too fat, just right.
๐ŸงŽโ€โ™€๏ธ
You may not be fancy or showy, no bold colours or crazy designs, but thatโ€™s how I like it. How I like to practise, why I love to be on you.
๐ŸงŽโ€โ™€๏ธ
You know I never leave home without you. You bring me into such a safe place where I can stand, lie, move, breath, meditate. Sometimes slow and easeful, other times rushed and frustrated.
๐ŸงŽโ€โ™€๏ธ
Honestly simply rolling you out each morning brings all the sensations of ease, calm, presence, inviting letting go. I never regret stepping onto you, first yoga mat.
๐ŸงŽโ€โ™€๏ธ
Whether youโ€™re in my car boot, suitcase, hotel room, friendโ€™s loungeroom you never tell any stories. Stories about what I do or donโ€™t practise, which poses I avoid, which ones I do over and over, when I wobble, when emotions overwhelm me.
๐ŸงŽโ€โ™€๏ธ
You are imbued with serenity and peace from my hours of dedicated practice โ€“ asana, pranayama, meditation, self-study.
๐ŸงŽโ€โ™€๏ธ
Itโ€™s OK first yoga mat, weโ€™ll have many years together as I traverse this path, before I upgrade you for a new improved shiny model.
๐ŸงŽโ€โ™€๏ธ
Love you first yoga mat, your loyal student ๐Ÿ’Ÿ

Japanese concepts are simple yet so powerful and interestingly, people there live longer than people anywhere else in the world! One of their 'secrets' is the ikigai, the 'meaning' that shapes their lives.
๐ŸŒฑ
Their concept of connecting with ikigai truly resonates with me in this 'retirement' stage of life. Their suggestions are:
๐ŸŒฑ
1. Stay active. People who give up what they love doing and do well, lose their purpose in life. Keep doing things of value, shaping the world.
๐ŸŒฑ
2. Take it slowly. When you leave urgency behind, life and time take on new meaning.
๐ŸŒฑ
3. Donโ€™t overfill your stomach. To stay healthier longer, consider eating a little less than your hunger indicates.
๐ŸŒฑ
4. Surround yourself with good friends. Friends are the best medicine for being yourself, confiding, sharing stories, having fun.
๐ŸŒฑ
5. Get in shape for your next birthday. Our physical body needs daily maintenance and exercise releases hormones which make you feel happy.
๐ŸŒฑ
6. Smile. A cheerful attitude is not only relaxing, but it also helps you make friends.
๐ŸŒฑ
7. Reconnect with nature. Human beings are part of the natural world - return to it often to refresh and recharge.
๐ŸŒฑ
8. Give thanks. Spend a moment giving thanks every day and watch your happiness grow.
๐ŸŒฑ
9. Live in the moment. Stop regretting the past and fearing the future. Today is all we have, make the most of it.
๐ŸŒฑ
