Curiously, over the past month we have been approached by many people asking if we could trace his or her biological father (usually name unknown) when the name of the father is either not on the birth certificate, or known to be wrong. In every case the person approaching us has had their DNA tested by one of the many vendors offering the service, but did not know what to do next. In each case those contacting us was over 60 years of age.

We have a little experience in cases such as this and could tell them that we may be able to find their father’s grandparents or great grandparents but it was unlikely we could actually identify their father. And the process was long and costly, usually over $15,000. As time goes on and many more people have their DNA tested this might change.
