How to calm overactive energy
In the Q&A portion of a recent video class, a student asked Lee what they should do when they get too activated during Qi Gong practice.
Here's their question, and Lee's answer follows:
Student:
I've suffered from PTSD and depression since I was a little kid, and Qi Gong has been the only thing that has helped.
I'm also a mental therapist, and I encourage my clients to try it as well.
Since I'm always activated internally to some degree, that's been my issue. I often find that in the beginning portion of the class, where you're activating the energy, I don't know if I'm just confusing it with the negative energy that I've been feeling my whole life, but it gets uncomfortable a little bit—like I'm too activated. I'm highly sensitive to energy, so I just wanted to hear if you had anything to say about that.
Lee:
When we involve the body and discharge deeply held emotional energy in our system, it works really well. Add in working with professionals such as yourself, herbs, supplements, and healthy eating, and it can help create a big shift, especially for sensitive people who can feel overactivated.
But when we're sensitive to energy, we feel things bigger. So, as we start to shift energy and it gets moved out and dealt with, it can bring back up these experiences and activate a bit of a healing crisis.
You can say, "I didn't want to feel the energy at this time," but when you give your energy system permission with a practice like Qi Gong, it's going to start the healing process on its own.
Understanding these energetic shifts is really helpful. You can say, "Okay, that's just energy moving out and through me. I always have this earth underneath me. I have this earth energy here I can use as compost." It works a lot like gardening. Move through me, and here's the earth. In replacement for it, the earth gives me something that is very useful to me.
Healing sounds are essential. Pull down the heavens with triple warmer sounds should always be in your pocket if you need it. The sound is "heeeeee." Pull down the heavens. Heee sound. Five minutes of that usually makes you feel really relaxed and much more integrated.

If you feel too activated, put your bare feet on the earth. Stand in the grass or in the garden. A couple of minutes of pulling down the heavens with bare feet on the earth usually takes care of it as well.
Another thing you can do is connect to your center. Bring hands over the naval. Do some slow, deep breathing. Bring your energy to the center, where it's more digestible. Then, let it pass and move through you.
