What does ‘transparent practice’ mean?

The concept of ‘open’ veterinary hospitals is something that’s been gaining popularity across the veterinary sector for the past few years. What it essentially means is a different approach to vet care that makes owners an active participant in the care of their animals.

So, rather than leaving pet parents worrying in the waiting room, we’re able to invite them behind the scenes to see their pet’s treatment in action.

We welcome pet parents into our treatment rooms, making sure that they’re involved in key treatment decisions and even there during recovery.🐾❤️

Bam Bam, Pikachu & Chiko say hey…
They are a bit sleepy still because they all underwent specialist BOAS -“Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome” surgery performed by specialist surgeon Dr Ben and the Melbourne Animal Referral Services Team today…

Even though 1 year old Frenchies Bam Bam & Pikachu were mild BOAS cases they both had very stenotic nares…
And Dr Ben found that they both had very long thick soft palates, with Pikachu’s being extremely long and thick, which as they aged would definitely end up with them being middle aged dogs struggling for air..

All three underwent the folded flap palatoplasty surgery technique to thin and trim their soft palates, tonsillectomies to remove their enlarged tonsils, saccules removed and the ala-vestibuloplasty technique to widen their nostrils/nares…
They are now all already enjoying more easily breathing air…

These three (now making it 12 of our dogs that have been part of the study in just the past few months) contributed to a scientific BOAS study Dr Ben is involved in…
Which not only helps our dogs but will have the opportunity to help all brachy dogs undergoing BOAS surgery yay…

Dr Ben felt Bam Bam’s knees…
And as we presumed she has bilateral MPL’s (both of her patellas/knee caps subluxate) and as we have seen he slightly flicking her legs she should have corrective surgery…

Time to have a big rest we say…
Crate rest, meds, hand feeding soft food for two weeks as post surgery recovery is coming their way…
Thanks to Dr Ben and the MARS Team for looking after these flat faces today…
And thanks to the Tooronga Veterinary Hospital stand in photo helpers who posed for us when most of the MARS Team had to go back into Emergency surgery late today…

“Boo” the DSH mix and “Dill” the Tonkinese BEST of FRIENDS came in for a health checkup after their owner spotted some blood in a stool.... unsure who it was, both purrfect kittys came in for a health check up with Dr Jenna Micallef and Nurse Blair McSpadden.

They instantly felt right at home!! Both spent most of the entire consult together up on the bench. They were too beautiful to not take an image of!

After they were both given a very thorough check over by Dr Jenna, they were sent away with some Gastrointestinal Prescription Diet Food to have for the next few days to settle those stomachs and make them feel much better all rounds! Perfect patients. 🧡
