Camouflaging isn’t one thing, it is a set of strategies that many people who identify as neurodivergent use to adapt in a world that often expects neurotypical behaviour. It is about blending into social surroundings and adjusting how you act so others don’t notice neurodivergent behaviours.
Masking = hiding and suppressing neurodivergent traits. It is presenting a persona that is “easier” for people to digest
Assimilation = working to fit in. It is putting on an act in social settings to appear at ease when you are not.
Compensation = a deliberate effort to learn social rules. It can often include copying or memorising body language or conversations so interactions feel “normal”.
These strategies can help to navigate social interactions but they can also be draining, stressful and not a reflection of one’s true self.
Finding spaces where you can just be and live your best life is one way Hargan Psychology likes to support their neurodivergent community. To discuss this further please feel free to contact us.
