In the old days, pre-2000, we used to say leave your veins for as long as possible before getting treatment.

Why did we say this?

Because the risks of treatment outweighed the risks of doing nothing and because treatment was not very successful.

What has changed?

A lot!

Treatment is now far more successful - 99.8% for laser at The Vein Centre and risks are extremely low - zero risk of major blood clots (compared to 5% for old fashioned surgery). Recovery is also nearly immediate.

You have up to a nine times higher risk of blood clots by leaving your varicose veins. Especially, if you were to undergo surgery such as knee or hip surgery.

The longer you leave your veins untreated, the higher the risk of problems and the more treatment needed.

When your veins are under more pressure without relief either due to long periods standing or sitting or due to varicose veins, the cells lining the veins separate and this allows larger molecules such as proteins, red and white blood cells to leak through into the surrounding fat and skin.

This causes irreversible skin and soft tissue damage.
