At NIIM, we understand that trying new treatments can feel overwhelming. That’s why our Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy team is dedicated to helping you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout your visit. Our friendly, highly experienced staff stay with you throughout
your treatment to ensure a safe and pleasant experience. Inside the chamber, you’ll be provided with a blanket and pillow for added comfort, and you’re welcome to bring a book or watch a show on TV during your session.

Our recent 'Friends of NIIM' newsletter featured an article from NIIM Integrative General Practitioner, Dr Tamara Nation, on interoception.

'In modern life, the body’s signals often become background noise: subtle cues overshadowed by deadlines, responsibilities, and digital stimulation. Yet, the human body is an information system, continuously sending messages about physiological balance, emotional states, metabolic needs, and possible signs of illness. Learning to listen to these signals is not simply “being in tune with yourself”, it lays a good foundation for preventive medicine and longterm wellbeing.

Interoception can be considered as the “eighth sensory system” which enables the brain to receive, interpret, and respond to internal bodily signals ie. Examples include internal sensations such as heartbeat, breathing, hunger, temperature changes, or muscle tension.'

Researchers from NIIM and Swinburne University are currently seeking volunteers for a study investigating how the diets of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis patients compare to the general community and how this might impact symptoms and immune function.

Participating in this study will involve one appointment at Swinburne University, Hawthorn where you will be asked to complete some blood tests and a series of questionnaires regarding your energy, mood and diet. You will also be asked to keep a diet diary for four days and wear a physical activity monitor for eight days.

Eligibility:
Aged 18-40 years old
Have been diagnosed with CFS/ME OR have no history of CFS/ME
Willing to provide blood samples
Fluent in written and spoken English

🚗By car: Time-limited parking is available in surrounding streets. Paid parking is available at Epworth Hawthorn directly across the road. There is limited all-day parking available at the rear of NIIM, accessible via the driveway on the right-hand side of the building. There is also a disabled ramp and a lift to Level 2.

🚂By train: Hawthorn Station is located 140 metres from NIIM or a 2 min walk.

🚃By tram: Tram 75 runs directly past NIIM with a stop at St. James Park or Hawthorn Station.
