It is with great regret that we would like to report of the sudden passing of Professor Ravi Thomas, an esteemed clinician who worked at the Oxford Eye Centre in Balmoral after leaving the Queensland Eye Institute. Best known for his work as a researcher and specialist in glaucoma from both international and national point of view.

Ravi was born to be an ophthalmologist having grown up with both parents being ophthalmologists where they worked in a small village in northern India in the late 1940s. He was exposed to ophthalmology at a young age, watching his parents consult and undertake surgical procedures in their Indian village.

Having been recruited by Professor Laurence Hirst into the Lion’s Eye Institute where he was their leading academic glaucoma specialist. Ravi made significant contributions not only as a clinician in glaucoma and glaucoma research but as a teacher, mentor, and friend to all his colleagues. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends alike.

It’s World Glaucoma Week this week!
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss. Around 80 million people have glaucoma worldwide, and 50% of these are unaware that they have the disease.
Periodic testing allows for early diagnosis and therefore, early intervention- thus a better chance at preserving vision long term.
