At SILC, we believe that people with disability with their families, are in the best position to make decisions about where they live, who they live with, and who supports them. We believe that great outcomes are achieved when families are actively involved in the person’s life.

SILC is a cooperative and a NDIS registered provider. We assist families to set up a cooperative to run a family governed home for their family member. Our experience is that people with disability who have a network of informal supports (family and friends), who have the desire and belief that self directing will provide the choice and control they are seeking, are best placed to succeed in this model.

Our cooperative came together on Tuesday night to exercise the 5th Cooperative Principle - Education, Training and Information.

A huge thanks to BlueCHP - Affordable, Social and Disability for an informative evening on the Participant Led Approach to Specialist Disability Accommodation.

The information was extremely valuable to our members, to allow them to contribute effectively to the development of their cooperative.

SILC and all of our cooperatives exist to support people with disability to achieve great life outcomes, and we know a participant led approach to Specialist Disability Accommodation will support that.

Another step closer to secure long term accommodation for our residents at My House Oatlands.

Over the weekend, SDA provider Blue CHP successfully purchased a property at a location close to the resident’s families. Blue CHP will design, develop and build a robust house for our residents at My House Oatlands.

Our residents have lived together for over 5 years in a rental accommodation. SILC as the SIL provider, with the families, have learnt so much over the years about the specific design needs to best support the residents.

We will be sharing these learnings with Blue CHP to support the customisation of the house to the needs of our resident.

We love seeing SILC residents doing incredible things at their day programs! Here is Sophie doing amazing work at The Stockyard community farm. Such a great program utilising the farm and animal therapy to assist people with disability to reach their goals.

Stranger in the Family is a one hour documentary made in 2002 that follows the experiences of three families over the course of a year as their children with autism participate in the GiantSteps & Stepping Stones programs. One family this documentary follows is the family of Patrick Anthony. Patrick is the son of Steve Anthony, SILC’s founder and pro-bono CEO.

Alongside the link is a picture of Patrick now at 31 years old grocery shopping with his longtime friend and housemate Douglas. Both men live at PaRA, a SILC home in Sydney.

There's no denying that the intricacies of SDA can be confusing at the best of times, so our friends at Summer Foundation have developed an SDA Explainer Video Series to help participants and providers gain a better understanding of Specialist Disability Accomodation. This useful resource provides information on topics such as who is able to live in SDA, the different types of SDA, how SDA funding works and how support works in SDA.
