HOW CAN I GET MORE/BETTER SLEEP IN MY THIRD TRIMESTER OF PREGNANCY?

I’m a little, in all good sense, bias, but massage is one of the best ways to improve your sleep! It will decrease pain and tension that would usually wake you up. Massage stimulates the release of serotonin which is a hormone necessary to produce melatonin which is your body’s sleep-inducer.

Another easy way to help sleep quality is by creating ways to keep your body aligned as you rest by using pillows around your hips and belly.

WOMEN ALWAYS ASK US THIS IN THEIR SECOND TRIMESTER!

Are leg cramps normal?

Normal? No. Common? Yes. There is a big difference between the two!

Many women get cramps (mainly during the night) in their legs during the second and third trimester due to compression of nerves supplying lower extremities due to their enlarging uterus alongside poor peripheral circulation.

Calf stretches in the morning and before bed along with regular massage therapy will drastically decrease these symptoms. If you are wanting to start a new exercise routine it is always advised to seek help from a qualified trainer.

Do you have a selfcare routine?

If not, you need to start today!

The easiest way is to write down a few ways you like to take care of yourself, whether that’s by taking a hot bath, going for a short walk, spending time with a loved one, even something as simple as sitting down with a hot cup of tea… and actually finishing it before it’s cold...

Each day of the week, choose something you enjoy doing for yourself and set yourself a time frame to be able to take care of yourself.
Some days may be something small, others may be more effort or time consuming. You may want to start small to avoid mum/dad guilt and make your way to the more luxurious things on your list!

If you already have a selfcare routine, help other parents out and leave your favourite way in the comment section!

PREGNANCY MASSAGE HELPS EASE BACK PAIN

As you and your baby grow, your centre of gravity changes along with the alignment of your spine and pelvis. Relaxin being released also softens the ligaments around the pelvis.

Lower back pain occurs in 60-70% of pregnancies which can be caused by circulatory, hormonal, mechanical and physiological factors.
Massage can assist in all of the above.

HOW WE HELP AFTER BABY ARRIVES!

Your pregnancy is over, but your treatment plan isn’t! Baby has arrived and you have spent every day catering to their every need. Now it is time to put you back on your priority list.

We now focus your sessions on the recovery after birth and the changes you have made with babe on the outside world.

Chances are you are comfortable laying on your stomach again with the support of a breast pillow, if not, you are still more than welcome receiving treatment side lying. Each mama is different, and we want you to be 100% comfortable.

We use both soft and deep tissue techniques to help decrease pain and tension around the upper back, neck and shoulders as you are now feeding your babe (and constantly staring at them). This will help avoid or reduce headaches and other pains you may be experiencing.

Every mother comes in with different symptoms which is kept in mind when tailoring your treatment each time you come in!

HOW WE STOP HEADACHES DURING PREGNANCY

Headaches and migraines are either partly or solely caused by physical issues within in the muscular system. Most likely by trigger points (knots) within the muscle tissue. These knots will send referral pains through the nervous system widening the area of pain felt.

Massage uses several techniques to decrease or eliminate the symptoms of headaches and migraines. Trigger point release is one of the most effective ways to treat headaches as most headaches, if not caused by muscles, have muscles react to the compensating changes. As the muscles are manually release of tension, they will decrease the pressure put through joints and eliminate the response within the nervous system to decrease or rid the body of painful symptoms.

Pregnancy massage therapy is an excellent way to decrease hormonal headache symptoms, taking pressure off the muscles surrounding the head and neck. Massage also has a direct impact on the circulation and production of hormones which can assist the regulation of hormones. A balanced diet and regular exercise are also ways to combat hormonal headaches.

HOW WE HELP IN THE SECOND TRIMESTER OF PREGNANCY!

Most likely, your treatment plan is well underway, and we have eased you into this stage of your pregnancy. By now, you will most likely be noticing the physical changes of your body, which is when we change our treatments to focus on the progression of your structural changes and the possible impact it will have on your body.

Depending on the mother’s wishes, we treat face down using a pregnancy pillow that supports the growing belly and tender breasts, or side lying.
We continue our treatments keeping in mind the new physiological changes such as the change in centre of gravity, respiratory changes, varicose veins and muscular cramping.

Using soft and deep tissue techniques we focus treatment around the hips and lower back to ease pain and tension created from your new posture. It is also a focus to decrease tension around the rib cage increasing space around the diaphragm.

Each session will begin with a quick questionnaire about how mum is feeling on the day and the treatment will be tailored accordingly.

Do you need a few selfcare suggestions to start your selfcare journey again?
Here are a few of our favourites!

• Get your body moving!
This may be a 10 minute workout in your lounge room, a 15 minute walk around the block, or even just a dance party with the little ones!
• Feed your body well!
You need to nourish your body with proper foods. If needed start a meal plan, even if it’s only for a few healthy meals a week, you need to start somewhere!
• Stay connected!
Being a parent makes socialising extremely hard, but it’s so important for your metal health! Book an hour each week to catch up with your loved ones for coffee or a play date, just to allow yourself some time outside of your family unit!
• Put sleep higher on your priority list!
Lack of sleep bring a whole list of adverse health consequences, don’t fall into the trap. I know it’s hard, but you need to focus on your sleep schedule too!
• Keep connected to yourself!
Ensure you are still doing the things you love, even if that means sharing them with your kids.
Take them to your favourite places, get them involved with your hobbies, get them trying your favourite foods. You matter too!

It’s great to lead by example and show your kids early on how important selfcare is!

WOMEN IN THEIR FIRST TRIMESTER ALWAYS ASK THIS!

How often should I get treatment?

In general we suggest beginning monthly treatment unless advised otherwise by your therapist. Generally, we then follow more closely as the pregnancy continues.

We want to get the body in its best possible condition for the physical changes that will occur and help support the mental and emotional changes through treatment.

HOW SOON IS TOO SOON?

If you have just given birth vaginally, light exercise can begin a few days after birth or when you feel your body is ready.

If you had a caesarean it will take around 6 weeks to heal, as it is a major operation, however pelvic floor exercises can start relatively early.

If any pain is experienced, stop. It is always advised to seek professional advice for exercise.

DON’T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF FUCSING ON RE**US ABDOMIALS

Most think of core strength as the abs, which is not entirely incorrect, although there is much more to it than just the abs. You core is made up of the abdominals, alongside you back muscles and spine, your whole abdomen is your core! Did you know you actually have FOUR separate abdominal muscles? You do now. Each having their own separate, yet very important job. Each one of these are vital during pregnancy.

All muscles of the core should be strengthened and stretched equally to ensure adequate strength and flexibility for full function of the core to prevent injury during pregnancy and aid labour/recovery.

HOW WE HELP IN THE THIRD TRIMESTER

You are now in the last stages of pregnancy, but we are not there yet!

Now is the time to prepare the body for labour and recovery as we have already done the leg work to prepare for this moment. We need to keep in mind the ever-changing physical aspects of your pregnancy.

Most mums who come in cannot wait to lay face down on our pregnancy pillows, however, there comes a stage when either your belly won’t fit, or you are just not comfortable laying on your stomach in which we begin side lying treatment.

Using soft and deep tissue techniques, we now focus on the parts of the body that are under most stress such as lower back, hips and legs. We continue to release the tension around the ribs making it possible to breath deeper.

Each and every mother and pregnancy are completely different which is why we tailor each session to the needs of mum and baby at every appointment.

Want to come in and can’t find a sitter?

Don’t stress! You are more than welcome to bring your kiddies along with you!

We know you would prefer to leave the little ones home and take this time to yourself, however, if needed we are more than happy to have the kids in the room while we treat!

A COMMONLY ASKED QUESTION FOR WOMEN IN THEIR FIRST TRIMESTER!

Can I start/continue exercise?

One of the reasons women avoid this is due to fear of miscarriage or injury, if you are healthy, with no underlying health conditions there is no reason you cannot begin exercise, although you should always gradually ease into exercise, don’t jump straight into high intensity (this is where injuries happen!)
If you are wanting to start a new exercise routine it is always advised to seek help from a qualified trainer.

HOW TO REGAIN ABDOMNIAL STRENGTH

Although pre-pregnancy is the better option for beginning exercise routines, there is still time to strength those muscles!
Depending how far along you are in your pregnancy, you will be able to (gently and slowly) gain strength in your core muscles so promote an easier pregnancy, labour and recovery.

If you have any underlying heath concerns, it is ALWAYS advised to seek advice from your doctor or a qualified trainer.

CAN YOU STILL EXERCISE IN THE SECOND TRIMESTER?

There is no reason why you shouldn’t exercise during pregnancy if there are no underlying conditions. There has been no research to indicate that physical activity during pregnancy causes miscarriage, poor foetal growth or premature labour.

There is a very small amount of cases where vigorous activity may not be recommended. It is always advised to seek help from a qualified trainer.
