About

My interest in Chinese Medicine began many years ago when I found the great benefits of acupuncture in treating my own health concerns and seeing results of others close to me. Realising for myself that by using this age-old medicine it enables/activates your own body’s innate ability to heal itself. When the body is in imbalance causing you pain or discomfort, my main priority as a practitioner is to get you back to being pain free or relieving your discomfort, whatever that may be. I understand that restoring your health will get you back to doing the everyday things that you enjoy most. In diagnosing and treating your condition I will use my knowledge and the appropriate methods which will be most effective for your presenting condition, allowing your body to reclaim its balance and recover from the disharmony in which it finds itself. My philosophy is to always create a relationship within a supportive and safe environment for my patients, where we can both work on getting the greatest benefits and lasting results for you. An individual and tailored treatment plan will be established unique to your individual condition. I hope that I can be of service to you in the near future. Special interests:

Last Friday I caught up with the team at to learn more about the services they offer and let them know the different ways acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be used to support women at all stages of life.

Yarra Valley Women’s Health offers inclusive, holistic care for people of all genders and ages, with a strong focus on pelvic and women’s health. Their team includes osteopaths along with a midwife, lactation consultant, dietician and psychologist making them an excellent hub of knowledge and support.

Often optimal patient outcomes involve a team approach. This is why at we love to team up with all the amazing practitioners in town. Acupuncture pairs beautifully with modalities such as osteopathy, particularly where there may be alignment issues or injury involved and I know there will be many of my patients that will benefit from connecting with .healthy.osteo and the team at YVWH.

At what point does your body get your attention? Do you pay attention and support your health with regular care ensuring you maintain health or do you wait until that ni**le becomes impossible to ignore then seek help?

Unfortunately I know most people - if they are being honest - are waiting on that ni**le to stop them in their tracks.....

Did you know in 16th century China the focus was on prevention of disease and maintenance of good health rather than treatment of symptoms? In fact the physician of the house would only be paid if the household occupants remained healthy!

So, back to you. Here’s an opportunity to stop and reflect on what you are doing for yourself to maintain good health?

Remember that your health is impacted by more than just the food we consume and the energy we expend. Observe your environment, your sleep, your work and lifestyle.

Feel like you could do with some guidance around good health routines? You don’t have to wait for illness to focus on health. Start now.

I have a last minute appointment available at 9am tomorrow at and a couple of spaces still available early next week.

Wry neck…

Have you injured yourself in your sleep?

We have all done it! It’s that sudden stiff neck that occurs often first thing in the morning, when you wake up and for some unknown reason you can no longer turn your head!

With Wry Neck the pain is usually more severe on one side and movement can be acutely painful sometimes including spasms that radiate out to the top of neck and all the way down to shoulder.

Often linked to a poor night sleep, wry neck can also be linked to an unusual activity or body movement. Occasionally it is the result of a sudden jolt type impact / injury.

Often I will find the underlying Traditional Chinese Medicine pattern to be a stagnation of Qi and Blood or / and Wind -Cold Invasion. Even more common during seasonal instability and sudden cold snaps like we are currently experiencing.

In treating Wry Neck I would use a combination of Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Cupping other awesome TCM therapies to promote movement of the Qi and Blood. This serves to resolve stagnation, introduce warmth and alleviate and associated pain and stiffness in the local area.

Pain such as Wry Neck or any of the other acute “how did I manage to do that in my sleep” injuries respond really well to TCM treatment so if you ever wake feeling stiff and sore don’t put up with the pain just get in touch with us at and you’ll be feeling back to your old self in no time.

Time to reintroduce myself!

👉Who is
Red Bridge Family Acupuncture is made up of myself as your practitioner and Alyssa as the person who you’ll often find on the end of the phone or email helping you with all the other stuff!

👉What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy that dates back approximately 3000 years. It promotes natural healing and improved body function by using fine (almost as thin as human hair) needles, gentle heat and other specialized tools to stimulate specific points and meridians around the body.

👉How does it work?
Traditional Chinese Medicine view pain, disease and ill health to be the result of imbalance of Yin and Yang and Qi (energy) flow around the body. Picture that you have a network of rivers running around your body that are all interconnected, these rivers are what we call the meridians. The ‘water’ flowing in these rivers is the Qi. When there is a blockage in the flow (think tree fallen over and creating a dam in the river) or a change to the strength of the flow from excess or deficiency then this manifests as ill health be it pain, illness or disease. Along the meridians are the acupuncture points. By identifying the root cause of the imbalance, we can stimulate the correct acupuncture points encouraging the Qi flow to be optimized and health to be restored.

👉Who do we treat?
At Red Bridge Family Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, it’s all about whole family healthcare. My perfect day is treating a 6-week-old baby a with needle free technique called Shonishin followed by an elderly patient in their 80’s and then every age in between!

👉 What are some of our specific areas of interest?
Pain in all of its presentations, gut health and digestion support, autoimmune disorders, kids health, men’s and women’s reproductive health and fertility treatment.... just to name a few.

Let’s talk about balance…

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective any experience of ill health signifies an imbalance in the body. These imbalances are caused by an excess or deficiency in one or more areas of your body.

Considering Qi (pronounced chee) in its most general of explanations to be an energy in your body. With that in mind know that each organ system in TCM has its own Qi. As such, symptoms of Qi deficiency are many and varied depending on which organ system or systems are affected.

Some examples are as follows:

DIGESTIVE: From a TCM standpoint the digestive system is governed by the Spleen. Symptoms of Spleen Qi deficiency may include digestive disturbance, weakness, bloating, loose bowel motions and disturbance of appetite.

LUNGS: Deficiency in Lung Qi may include asthma, weakness or breathy nature to the voice, weakness in the immune system and spontaneous sweating.

HEART: Deficiency in Heart Qi will involve symptoms of poor circulation, heart palpitations, impacts on mood and emotions due to the connection with disturbance of Shen.

KIDNEY: Deficiency in the Kidney Qi may result in hair loss, fertility issues, memory issues, back or knee pain.

So now that we know what a deficiency may look like how do we strengthen our Qi and avoid deficiencies?

Deficiencies are generally the result of influences in our lifestyle, diet and environment. There are also physical and emotional conditions that impact our Qi such as high levels of stress and lack of adequate rest or sleep.

Once we have identified the root cause to any Qi deficiency then we can use acupuncture and herbal medicines to restore balance. In conjunction with TCM support education and understanding around the influence of dietary and lifestyle choices and making the required changes will ensure long term optimal results.

Everyone has been talking about the expected wind tomorrow!

When the seasons are shifting it can often make for periods of very unstable weather! This can be challenging for our health especially when the temperatures fluctuate quickly and you seem to experience all the seasons in a week (or sometimes a day!)

This is so relevant for our approach to health care because in Traditional Chinese Medicine the external factors have a huge impact on our health.

Wind invasion may happen in two ways, it could enter our body from the outside (external wind on days like tomorrow) this most commonly attacking the lung and upper body. Wind can also be internally generated often due to a weak immune system (internal wind). An internal wind invasion would usually be related to a liver imbalance.

There are many examples of wind related health conditions including:
🍂common cold, influenza
🍂sinus infection
🍂sore throat & cough
🍂itchy sensations in the nose and eyes
🍂rashes on skin
🍂allergies
🍂eczema
🍂hair loss
🍂eye disorders
🍂early stage rheumatism
🍂Bell’s palsy

What are all 6 external forces?
💨wind
❄️cold
💧dampness
☀️summer heat
🌪dryness
🔥fire

Of course we see all of these external forces occurring within our seasonal changes it’s only when we find them occurring in an abnormal or excessive fashion or if our system is too weak to adapt to the shifts that we find it throws us off kilter.

The colour of Spring - Green

Once again it’s Spring so it all about keeping that Liver Qi happy and moving!

The Liver love green foods. They are the perfect choice for clearing Liver heat because they are cooling in nature.

Think about including lots of fresh leafy greens, spinach, green vegetables in your daily meals. Remember the weather is not hot yet so lightly steamed is still better than raw in Spring. It’s also a great time to add in super foods such as Chlorella and Spirulina.

Absorbing the colour green is also a supportive Spring habit. You can do this by way of Shinrin Yoku, which is a Japanese practice of ‘Forest Bathing’ - embracing the longer day light hours and increased sunshine is a great way to incorporate green colour therapy into your life.

Spending time in nature is always a plus for your health.

Yes, the sun is out, and the days are lengthening, it’s daylight savings on the weekend and I’ve even heard rumours about temps over 25 degrees!

Patience! Please don’t prep the salads and pack the winter clothes away in the spare suitcase just yet.

While all of these glimmers of the warmer weather to come tempt us to launch ourselves full throttle into Spring the reality is the upcoming initial weeks as the weather shifts will typically be a time of unstable weather patterns.

We are still going to have cool winds and chilly mornings and evenings. The 25 degree day on the weekend is likely to be followed by a flurry of 12 degree days again!

The combo of unstable weather and plentiful blooms of wattle and other blossoms creates the perfect recipe for seasonal colds, immunity issues and the emergence of allergies.

My advice - Keep warm, use layers, protect your neck with light scarves. Keep nourishing your body with warm easily digested foods. Be patient, the warmth will be here soon enough. Don’t race into Spring sunshine, wait for it to arrive properly.

Oh, and book an acupuncture session at to make sure you stay on top of the seasons!

October is Mental Health Month in Australia and I thought I’d take a moment to share some facts around men’s mental health shared from

2 in 5 men will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime and su***de is the leading cause of death for men under 55 years of age.

Some other men’s mental health facts:

💙3 out of every 4 su***des are men.

💙Men who are not in the workforce have 4 x the risk of depression.

💙Men who lack a close friendship circle have twice the risk of suicidal thoughts.

💙Maintaining a healthy body can strengthen men’s mental health.

You can find some great resources to support change amongst some of the alarming statistics on www.knowyourmanfacts.com/let_s_talk_about_men

It’s so common for men to face stigma when seeking support for health in general let alone mental health. Make sure you take this as a sign to reach out to the men in your circle and let them know that support is here.
