These Cenovis Vitamin C 250mg chewable tablets are really popular. They go on sale regularly, and from what I've heard, they're fairly tasty too- which is always a bonus, especially when we're wanting to dose kids!
Let's unpack what's in these chewable tablets.
The label states 'Contains saccharin sodium, gluten and glucose. No added lactose, artificial preservatives, dairy products, or animal-derived products'; as well as the Vitamin C content. Sounds fairly benign at first glance.
Excipients- or inactive ingredients- ie, the other stuff in this product other than the Vitamin C- aren't often listed on the label, so you need to put your detective hat on and look up the TGA summary to find this information.
-Saccharin sodium- also known as E954- can cause allergic and hypersensitive reactions, gastrointestinal ailments, headache/migraine, and skin ailments such as eczema, dermatitis, itching, hives, rashes.
-Calcium/sodium cyclamate- also known as E952- can cause headache/migraine, and skin ailments such as eczema, dermatitis, itching, hives, rashes.
-Sunset Yellow FCF- also known as E110- can cause allergic and hypersensitive reactions, asthma, behavioural problems, gastrointestinal ailments, hayfever, hyperactivity, learning difficulties and skin ailments such as eczema, dermatitis, itching, hives, rashes.
Chewable tablets tend to have artificial sweeteners to make them palatable, and artificial colours to make them look appealing.
I wanted to be able to recommend an alternative over the counter vitamin C chewable, but I checked 5 easily available brands and all of them had at least one of the above excipients. On the occasions I prescribe vitamin C to little people in the clinic, I use a practitioner only powder product which does not contain any nasties.
Considering supplement excipients is really important.
Most people take supplements because they're having health challenges, so avoiding excipients that could potentially contribute to those challenges is especially advisable.
Let me know if you have found a chewable vitamin C that you think I should take a look at!
