For Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, we’re sharing Jess’s story.

A mum of three, Jess was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2022. After chemotherapy at Mercy Hospital for Women and further treatment at partner hospitals, she entered remission — but the cancer later returned.

Through it all, she has leaned on the kindness of staff, the strength of her girls, and her own resilience. Her message is simple: “Know your body, listen to changes, and get checked if something feels off. Early detection saves lives.”

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of hospitalisation in young infants, but vaccination during pregnancy offers a safe and effective way to protect babies before they’re born.

If you’re between 28 and 36 weeks pregnant, you may be eligible for a free RSV vaccine through the National Immunisation Program. The vaccine helps your body produce antibodies that pass to your baby, reducing their risk of severe RSV illness by around 70 per cent.

You can receive the RSV vaccine through your GP, participating pharmacies and local council immunisation clinics. It can also be given alongside other recommended vaccines in pregnancy, such as flu and whooping cough.

Important Update: Construction in the onsite car park

Construction is currently taking place in the hospital car park. During this period, you may notice reduced parking availability and increased noise and dust in and around the car park.

To prepare for your visit:
- Arrive early to allow extra time for parking
- Consider being dropped off at an alternative hospital entrance.

People with lung conditions or weakened immune systems should take the following extra precautions:
- Use an alternative entrance away from construction areas
- Wear a mask when passing through the car park or outdoor spaces with dust
- If you have concerns, speak to your healthcare team before your visit.

We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

Shining with Mercy spirit at Holy Rosary School in Kensington!

Late last year, Holy Rosary, a Mercy School, held a swaddle drive – collecting more than 50 swaddles and bunny rugs for Mercy Hospital for Women’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

“The students loved hearing about the small and brave babies we care for in our unit,” said NICU Registered Nurse Erin Church. “And they were so happy that our families would be able to choose some colourful bedding to make nests for our patients to rest comfortably in.”

Erin’s sons attend Holy Rosary School, and she was presented with the generous gifts at a school assembly in late 2024.

Holy Rosary School was run by the Sisters of Mercy until 2012.
