This JulEYE, let’s build simple habits that go a long way in supporting health. Here are some daily practices to support your eye health:

1. Blink more & take screen breaks – Follow the 20-20-20 rule to reduce digital eye strain: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

2. Use eye drops to stay hydrated – Dry eyes? Keep eye drops close by and stay well-hydrated to keep your eyes hydrated.

3. Wear sunglasses for UV safety – Even in winter, UV rays can harm your eyes.
Protect them outdoors with high quality sunglasses. Look for those with a rating of UV400+.

4. Practice good hygiene – Wash your hands before touching your face or eyes, and
clean your lenses or glasses regularly to avoid irritation and infection.

5. Refill & update prescriptions – Make sure your glasses or contact lens
prescriptions are up to date. Remember your vision can change over time, and can vary between glasses and contacts so ensure your prescription is suited to your current needs.

6. Schedule regular eye exams – Don’t wait for symptoms. Proactive eye exams help
catch issues early, before they affect your vision. Book one now!

Remember, healthy eyes start with healthy habits. Which one will you start to implement today?

Did you know that 90% of vision loss is preventable or treatable when detected early?

Yet many Australians delay their eye checks, often until symptoms become serious.

Millions live with long-term eye conditions like myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), astigmatism, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

The problem? Well, many of these conditions can develop gradually, without noticeable symptoms in the early stages.

That’s why regular eye exams matter. They help detect issues early and give you the best chance to protect your vision in the long run.

Let JulEYE be your reminder to put your eye health first, because prevention starts with awareness.

Our eyes do so much. They help us read, work, drive, connect with others, and see everything life has to offer.

Over 13 million Australians live with one or more long-term eye conditions, many of which can impact how we see and live; with these becoming increasingly prevalent as we age. Our vision is something we often take for granted, until it begins to change. That’s why caring for your eyes today is one of the best investments you can make for your future.

This JulEYE, take a moment to appreciate how lucky we are to see, and for this reason, take action to protect it. A simple eye exam can go a long way.

Did you know dry eye is commonly caused by our tears not providing adequate lubrication for our eyes? Because of insufficient/poor tear quality, we experience inflammation that can cause a burning or itching sensation.
If you're living with dry eye, you don't have to struggle. Book in with any of our optometrists at Warringal for a comprehensive eye exam where we investigate tear production and tear evaporation, as well as the integrity of your tear film.

June is Cataract Awareness Month.
Did you know that cataracts are a leading cause of blindness worldwide, and nearly half of Australians over 50 are affected?

Cataracts cloud the lens of the eye, leading to blurred vision, light sensitivity, and reduced visual clarity. They’re commonly caused by ageing, but can also result from genetics, diabetes, eye injuries, smoking, or excessive UV exposure.

Here’s the good news: with regular eye exams, cataracts can often be detected early and monitored to help preserve vision.

If you’ve noticed changes to your vision — like cloudiness, halos, or trouble seeing at night — it may be time to speak with a qualified eye health professional. Early detection supports better long-term outcomes.

Travel tip: Don't leave home without a spare pair of glasses!
It could be a lifesaver if anything happens to your main pair while you're on the go.

Remember to split them up - stash one in your checked luggage and keep the other in your carry-on. That way, if your checked bags go missing, you're still covered!

FUN FACTS ABOUT EYES

➊ One million colours?

The human eye can distinguish approximately one million different colours — amazing, right?

➋ Upside down?

Every image that hits our retina is actually upside down. Luckily, our brain flips it so we see right-side up.

➌ The body’s fastest muscle?

The orbicularis oculi — the muscle used for blinking — is the fastest reacting, responding in less than 1/100th of a second.

➍ Lucky green?

Green eyes are the rarest natural eye colour. Only around 2% of the world’s population has them.

➎ More than just seeing?

Optometrists can detect early signs of conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and even brain tumours through eye checks. Your eyes are incredible!

May is Macula Awareness Month!
Did you know that over 14% of people over the age of 50 have macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a condition that affects the macula, the part of the eye responsible for central vision. It causes blurred or distorted vision, making everyday tasks like reading or driving difficult. Without treatment, the condition can worsen over time, leading to vision loss.
Early detection is key — a simple eye exam can help in the fight against macular degeneration. Don’t wait, check in on your loved ones and schedule an eye exam to help combat macular degeneration!
