Listening doesn’t always look the way we expect.
For many autistic children, listening isn’t shown through eye contact or stillness.
It happens internally through processing, regulation, and focus.
Someone can be deeply engaged while looking away.
They can be listening while moving, fidgeting, or staying quiet.
Communication isn’t just about what we see on the outside.
It’s about understanding what’s happening within.
When we widen our idea of what listening looks like,
we create safer spaces for connection 💛

🤍 CALM & CONNECTED SATURDAY

🌙 Wind-Down Routines
Wind-down routines help children transition from the busyness of the day into a calmer, more settled state.
Predictable, gentle routines can support the nervous system by signalling that it’s safe to slow down. This can be especially helpful after school, before bed, or following a big day.
🧸 Simple wind-down ideas might include:
🎨 Quiet play or drawing
📖 Reading together
🧘 Gentle stretches or movement
💡 Dimmed lights and reduced noise
🕰 A familiar, predictable order to the evening
Wind-down routines don’t need to be perfect or rigid.
It’s the consistency and calm that matter most.
Helping the body slow down makes it easier for the mind to do the same 🤍

Respect isn’t defined by eye contact alone.
For many autistic people, eye contact can feel uncomfortable or overwhelming.
Looking away doesn’t mean they aren’t listening, caring, or engaged.
Often, it simply means they’re focusing
on their hands, their thoughts, or finding their sense of calm.
Eye contact is just one way people communicate.
Respect is shown through patience, understanding, and allowing individuals to connect in ways that feel safe for them.
When we stop expecting one “right” way to communicate,
we make more room for genuine connection 💛

🤍 CALM & CONNECTED SATURDAY

🌀 Movement for Calm
Movement isn’t always about burning energy.
For many children, slow, rhythmic movement can help the nervous system feel calm, organised, and safe.
Gentle movement can support regulation by helping the body release tension and find balance.
🧸 Some calming movement ideas include:
🚶 Walking or pacing
🌿 Rocking or gentle swinging
🧘 Stretching or yoga-style poses
⚽ Slow bouncing on a ball
🧱 Pushing or pulling movements
When movement is predictable and steady, it can help children feel more grounded and settled.
Sometimes, calm doesn’t come from stopping movement
it comes from choosing the right kind of movement 🤍

🤍 Calm & Connected Saturday | The Power of Deep Pressure 👐

Deep pressure activities provide firm, steady input to the body, which can help many children feel calm, safe, and regulated.
This type of input works through the muscles and joints and can be very soothing for the nervous system especially during times of overwhelm or big emotions.
🧸 Some simple deep pressure ideas include:
🧸 Big bear hugs (only if your child enjoys them)
🛏 Being wrapped snugly (and safely) in a blanket or towel
🪶 Lying under a weighted blanket or heavy doona (safely)
⚽ Gently rolling a cushion or therapy ball over the body
🧱 Pushing hands firmly into a pillow or wall

Deep pressure should always feel comforting and safe never forced.
When offered in the right way, it can help children reset and feel more at ease.
Sometimes, helping the body feel calm is the first step to everything else 🤍

🕊 Sensory Saturday: Create Your Calm Space
As school routines begin again, creating a “calm corner” at home can make transitions smoother.
🌿 Choose a quiet corner with low light.
🧸 Add a beanbag, soft blanket, or favourite toy.
🎧 Keep headphones or fidgets nearby.
💙 Decorate with calming colours (teal, blue, cream).
This small setup helps children regulate, unwind, and feel safe after busy days.

✨ Sensory Saturday: Calm Jar Creations ✨
Calm jars (also called glitter jars) are a beautiful way to help children regulate emotions.
Here’s how to make one at home:
🧴 Fill a clear jar with warm water.
🌈 Add glitter, a few drops of food colouring, and a little glue or glycerin.
🔄 Seal tightly, shake, and watch the glitter slowly swirl and settle.
When emotions run high, watching the glitter settle can help kids and parents!
slow down too. 💙
