Choosing your care provider: What to look for and the right questions to ask.
As you and your family move closer to having your Support at Home funding assigned, an important milestone is approaching: choosing a care partner you’ll trust in your home.
Whether you’re seeking care for yourself or organising it for a loved one, finding the right fit is essential.
Many families begin speaking with care providers during the waiting period, so they feel confident in their choice when funding is assigned.
Here are four questions families ask when comparing providers:
1. Who will be coming into the home?
Ask if support will be provided by a dedicated, small team. This ensures everyone involved has the peace of mind that comes with seeing a friendly, familiar face at every visit.
2. How much of the budget goes towards actual care?
Ask for a clear breakdown of service costs and management fees so you know whether your funding will be maximised for hands-on services or administrative support.
3. How flexible is the schedule?
Support should wrap around your life, not the other way around. Ask how easy it is to adjust the timing of visits if family events, appointments, or other plans come up.
4. What happens if needs change?
Health and support needs can evolve. It’s helpful to understand how quickly a care provider can adjust services up or down, and whether they can help you navigate a Support Plan Review if needed.
Beyond these questions, pay attention to how a care provider makes you and your family feel. Do they take the time to listen? Do they show genuine interest in your family's preferences?
Choosing a care provider is about more than just checking boxes - it’s about finding a care partner who respects independence, understands the emotional realities of caring for a loved one, and whom you will be comfortable welcoming into your home.
