National Reconciliation Week (27 May–3 June) invites all of us to reflect on our shared histories and consider the role we each play in shaping a more inclusive future.

This year’s theme, ‘All In’ is a simple but powerful reminder: reconciliation happens in the everyday. It’s in the conversations we have, the curiosity we bring and the actions we choose to take.

For those wondering where to start, being ‘All In’ doesn’t have to mean big gestures. It can look like taking time to learn whose Country you’re on, listening to First Nations voices and experiences, supporting First Nations businesses, or challenging your own assumptions.

At UnitingCare, this work is part of who we are. Our Reconciliation Action Plan helps guide how we build stronger relationships, create culturally safe environments and continue learning as an organisation. (You can read it here: https://myuniting.care/4tCGpXt.)

We know there’s always more to do. And NRW is a moment to pause and reflect, but also to ask: what’s one thing I can do differently this week - and keep doing beyond it?

St Stephen's Hospital is proudly part of UnitingCare.

Today is National Sorry Day, when we honour and acknowledge the Stolen Generations, their resilience, and that of their families and communities.

On this day in 1998, the first National Sorry Day was held to commemorate the anniversary of the Bringing them Home report on the separation of First Nations children from their families.

The theme for 2026, From Sorry to Action, calls on all of us to move beyond words and into meaningful, sustained action. Acknowledging past harm is important, but acting to address it is critical. Sorry signals compassion, action delivers justice.

We stand with First Nations communities in an ongoing commitment to truth-telling, healing and lasting change.

🌟 National Volunteer Week 🌟

Last week, we came together to celebrate the incredible volunteers who give their time, care and kindness to others every day. From supporting patients and visitors to brightening someone’s day, their impact is truly felt across our hospital.

This year’s theme, Your Year to Volunteer, is the perfect reminder that there’s no better time to get involved. To each of our volunteers – thank you. You make a difference in ways that matter. 🩵

We're looking for a special group of volunteers to help bring connection and companionship to our patients through our new Compassionate Companions program 🩵👋

Designed to support patients who are living with dementia or experiencing delirium during their hospital stay, the program connects trained volunteers with patients for social engagement and companionship.

“We know that social engagement has many benefits for patients and is demonstrated to support recovery and reduce length of stay, making the role of our Compassionate Companions both meaningful and impactful,” said Rev Keren Seto, St Stephen’s Manager of Mission and Pastoral Care.

Is it your year to volunteer? Learn more and apply today at https://bit.ly/49VJriq

If you’ve passed through our foyer, you may have heard the gentle tones of Annette’s harp filling the space with calm.

Annette is a Certified Healthcare Musician, specially trained to bring music into hospitals with purpose and care. Through harp — and sometimes accompanied by voice — she creates moments of peace for patients, visitors and staff, whether someone is arriving for an appointment, sharing a quiet meal in the cafe, or navigating a difficult day.

Her music offers comfort, connection and reassurance — supporting people experiencing anxiety, grief or illness, and gently holding space for families during end‑of‑life care. As Annette beautifully puts it, through sound and music, people are truly being blessed.

Have you noticed how music can change the way a space feels? Tell us in the comments 👇

Thank you, Annette, for the warmth and serenity you bring to St Stephen’s Hospital. 💙

🌟 Happy International Nurses Day 🌟

Today, we proudly recognise and thank our dedicated nurses at St Stephen’s. Your compassion, professionalism and commitment to high‑quality care make a meaningful difference to our patients, their families and our hospital community every day.

Our nurses are central to the care we provide – supporting one another, showing kindness under pressure and delivering excellence across every ward and theatre area. We are incredibly proud of the role you play in caring for those who rely on us.

As part of today’s celebration, our Executive Team visited wards and theatres to personally thank our nursing staff, sharing a cookie and thank‑you card as a small gesture of our appreciation. 🍪💙

💙 Thank you, nurses, for everything you do – today and every day. 💙

Wishing our St Stephen's community a very Happy Mother’s Day, with special thanks to the many mums caring for our patients and families today 💐🩵

Wherever today finds you, we hope you enjoy a special day and find an opportunity to reflect and rejoice in the contribution of mothers and all the important women in our lives who nurture, guide and support us.

We acknowledge that this day can hold many different meanings. Alongside the joy and celebration, there may also be quiet reflection, gratitude or grief. Our thoughts are with anyone experiencing a difficult day today.

Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of a busy hospital? 🤔

We’re excited to give you a look inside our Central Sterilising Services Department (CSSD), which has recently undergone a transformation with the installation of three brand-new washer-disinfectors.

The new technology brings a higher level of automation, helping to reduce manual handling, improve efficiency, and make day-to-day sterilisation of surgical instruments safer and easier for our CSSD team.

St Stephen’s CSSD team play a vital role in ensuring instruments are cleaned, sterilised and packed ready for every surgical procedure – which helps to keep our operating theatres running smoothly and our patients safe through best-practice infection control.

We love seeing the team enjoying their upgraded workspace! 🩵

A big congratulations to our March VIP Award winner, Registered Nurse Alpheca! 🙌

Alpheca was recognised for embracing a wound care leadership role with enthusiasm, strong clinical knowledge and compassion, achieving outstanding patient outcomes while exemplifying teamwork, leading through learning and excellence in care.

Her nomination said: "Ally has indicated her interest in wound care education ... with the intention of stepping up into a champion position. Ingram has had two patients in the last month who were admitted with non-healing large leg ulcers. During their time in Ingram, both patients’ ulcers have shown amazing results – one completely healed, and the other with approximately a 50% reduction in size." 👏
