Dry Needling + Red Light Therapy 🔥

One of my favourite combinations in clinic is working on the erector spinae muscles (the long postural muscles that run either side of your spine) using dry needling, while you relax on a red light therapy blanket.

Dry needling works directly on tight or overactive muscle bands to:
• Release deep muscle tension
• Reduce trigger points
• Improve movement and pain

At the same time, red light therapy supports your body on a cellular level. The wavelengths are absorbed by your cells — particularly the mitochondria — which may help:
• Support energy production (ATP)
• Promote tissue repair
• Reduce inflammation

So we’re working both:
➡️ Locally (muscle release)
➡️ Systemically (cellular support)

Clients often say this combination feels deeply therapeutic and calming at the same time — not just for the back, but for the whole body.

If you’ve been holding tension through your spine or dealing with ongoing tightness, this is a beautiful way to support your body.

Bruising after dry needling… is it normal?

Sometimes after a dry needling session, you might notice a small bruise—and yes, this can be completely normal.

Dry needling works by targeting tight muscle bands (trigger points). These areas can be quite sensitive and have tiny blood vessels running through them. Occasionally, a needle may nick one of these vessels, which can lead to a small bruise.

✨ Even with precise, skilled technique, this can still happen from time to time—it’s just part of how the body responds.

What’s normal:
• Small bruise
• Mild tenderness
• Settles within a few days

Why it might happen:
• Tight or reactive muscles
• More sensitive areas of the body (like shoulders, hips, lower back)
• Individual differences in skin and circulation

💡 Important:
Bruising isn’t a sign that anything has gone wrong—it’s simply one of the possible, harmless side effects of treatment.

When to check in:
If a bruise is large, painful, or not improving after about a week, feel free to reach out—I’m always here to support you.

✔️ Staying hydrated, gentle movement, and a bit of self-care can help your body recover smoothly.

If you ever have questions after your session, don’t hesitate to ask 🤍

🧠✨ Understanding Neck, Shoulder & Arm Nerve Patterns (C2–T1 Dermatomes)

Ever wondered why pain, tingling, or numbness can travel down your arm or into your hand?

This is due to dermatomes—areas of skin supplied by specific spinal nerves in your neck and upper back.

🔹 C2–C4
Back of the head, neck, and upper shoulders

🔹 C5
Shoulder and outer upper arm 💪

🔹 C6
Outer forearm and thumb 👍

🔹 C7
Middle finger and centre of the hand ✋

🔹 C8
Little finger and inner hand/forearm

🔹 T1
Inner forearm and upper arm

💡 Important to know:
There are 7 neck bones (vertebrae) but 8 nerve roots.
The extra nerve (C8) comes out just below the C7 vertebra—this often confuses people!

💡 Why this matters:
If a nerve becomes irritated (from posture, tight muscles, or injury), symptoms like pain, tingling, or numbness often follow these patterns.

👉 This is why neck and upper back tension can sometimes be felt all the way down the arm.

✨ This is something I often assess in clinic when clients present with arm or hand symptoms.

✨ Massage can help relieve muscle tension and reduce pressure around these nerve pathways, supporting better movement and comfort.

🌀 Rotator Cuff 101: Meet the 4 Shoulder Stabilizers! 🌀

Your shoulder is a superstar of movement — but it wouldn’t work without these 4 muscles:

💪 Supraspinatus – lifts your arm sideways 🖐️
💪 Infraspinatus – rotates your arm outwards 🔄
💪 Teres Minor – small but mighty, helps rotate out & stabilize 💥
💪 Subscapularis – rotates your arm inwards and keeps it steady 🔒

✨ Together, they keep your shoulder strong, stable & pain-free!

🎥 Check out the video, this doesn’t show the 4 muscles responsible for the rotator cuff, but it does show 2…

This is why massage. Cupping and graston technique work so well. It’s all about getting the correct blood flow to the areas.

The Power of Healthy Blood Circulation

Healthy blood flow is essential for the body’s natural healing and balance. Blood carries many vital elements that support the body, including:

• Oxygen – fuels cells so they can produce energy.
• Nutrients – delivers vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from the food we eat.
• Hormones – chemical messengers that help regulate many body functions.
• Immune cells – help the body defend against infection.
• Waste removal – carries away carbon dioxide and metabolic waste products.
• Temperature regulation – helps maintain a stable body temperature.
• Healing factors – platelets and proteins that assist with tissue repair.

Massage therapy can help encourage healthy circulation, allowing the body’s natural systems to function more efficiently and supporting overall wellbeing.

Having TENSION HEADACHES and Neck pain..
These are the tricky little culprits that need addressing.
SPLENIUS CAPITUS

The muscle shown is the splenius capitis. It runs from the spinous processes C7–T3 up to the mastoid process behind the ear. It’s a very common source of neck and upper-back pain, especially in people who look down a lot or hold tension.

Typical symptoms when this muscle is tight or irritated

Local symptoms
• Pain at the base of the skull
• Tenderness just behind the ear (mastoid area)
• Tight band feeling along the upper neck
• Stiffness turning the head

Referred pain patterns
• Headaches that start at the base of skull and travel to the temple or eye
• Pain behind the eye
• Ache along the upper shoulder blade border
• Sometimes mistaken for migraine or tension headache

Functional signs
• Pain when turning head to one side
• Pain when looking up
• Forward head posture aggravates it

How massage helps

Massage is very effective because it:
• Relaxes contracted fibres
• Improves blood flow
• Reduces trigger points
• Decreases headache frequency

Best massage techniques
• Slow stripping from T3 upward to mastoid
• Sustained trigger point pressure near C2–C3 and mastoid attachment
• Gentle cross-fibre work
• Myofascial release along posterior neck

People often feel headache relief immediately.

Heat vs cold

Heat is best in most cases
• Relaxes muscle fibres
• Improves circulation
• Reduces stiffness

Use:
• Heat pack 15–20 minutes
• Especially before massage or stretching

Cold is only useful if acutely inflamed or injured, which is less common here.

Dry needling

Dry needling works extremely well for splenius capitis trigger points.

Benefits
• Rapid release of deep trigger points
• Reduces referred headaches
• Improves neck rotation
• Often effective when massage alone isn’t enough

Typical response
• Twitch response
• Muscle soreness for 24 hours
• Then significant relief

Simple self-release you can do
1. Place fingers just behind ear on bone
2. Press gently inward and slightly upward
3. Hold 20–30 seconds
4. Slowly turn head opposite direction

✨ Fascia release — when the whole body is invited ✨

Many of my clients have already experienced IASTM / metal tool work during sessions — perhaps on a shoulder, hip, calf, or an area of long-held tightness.

What’s changed recently is how intentionally I now work with the fascia as a full-body system.

After completing further training on fascia, the nervous system, and how fascia can hold stress and emotional load, my sessions now support both:

🤍 physical release
🤍 nervous system down-regulation

Fascia is continuous — not isolated.
When one area softens, the body often wants the rest to follow.

This is why full-body fascia release can feel profoundly different:
• deeper softening
• a sense of lightness or ease
• emotional shifts without needing to talk
• the body feeling more integrated and calm

This isn’t counselling, I’m not qualified yet, (that comes much later after I’m qualified) and there’s no expectation to process emotions.
Any emotional release happens naturally, as the body feels safe enough to let go.

✨ Time matters.
While many clients are familiar with 90-minute sessions, some bodies benefit from more space.
I now offer extended sessions of up to 2 hours, allowing the body to settle, connect, and release more fully — without rushing.

If you’ve had this work before and felt it helped but wanted more, this may be the missing piece.

💬 Message me to discuss whether a 90-minute or 2-hour session is right for you

Here are some insights into the webinar on Fascia, very interesting how it connects to the nervous system in relation to emotional responses too. We all know if we get stressed it holds in the neck and can cause pain and tension headaches, 🌟fascia influences the nervous system and can store emotions and pain.

This deepened my understanding of the mind-body connection and how our tissues respond to stress, movement, and trauma—knowledge I can bring into my massage and bodywork sessions.

Excited to integrate these insights to help clients release tension, restore movement, and support overall well-being. 💆‍♀️💛 more information to come soon.

Behind the scenes of my work ✨

I’m booked into another professional webinar this Monday, focusing on fascia, motor control, and how the nervous system influences movement and pain.

Ongoing education is something I take seriously — not because I have to, but because understanding the body at a deeper level means I can support my clients more effectively.

Massage isn’t “just a massage” for me. It’s about how fascia, movement, and the nervous system all work together — and how that knowledge can make a real difference to how your body feels and functions.

Always learning, always refining, always for your benefit 💛
