Our CoRe team is passionate about providing practical and creative strategies to help children and parents/carers. We offer over 25 years of experience in providing counselling to families and children within multiple schools and children's hospitals as well as private sessions in the CoRe rooms in Melbourne. Children often receive messages from the adults around them that aggressive, risky, and messy play are undesirable. However, engagement in these types of play is critical for children’s social, physical, and emotional development.

Through aggressive play, children experience heightened emotions and can learn skills in self-regulation, and they can test the limits of their abilities and learn to make choices. Messy play can help them build fine and gross motor skills and meet sensory needs and experiences.

Children use play as a powerful form of communication—expressing their thoughts, feelings, and wishes through their actions and storytelling. Likewise, the language we use with children holds immense power when used intentionally. Yet, in everyday interactions, adults often fall back on praise to reinforce prosocial behaviour, without always considering its deeper impact.

In Child-Centred Play Therapy (CCPT), we strive to maintain a stance of neutrality and non-judgement about the play a child chooses to engage in. Play is serious business for children—it helps them process and make sense of events and experiences from their everyday lives. The way we communicate during these moments of play can either support or undermine a child’s sense of autonomy, capability, and worth.
