1 in 7 Australian children aged 4-17 experiences a mental health condition in any given year.

Of those, fewer than half receive any professional help.

Early intervention changes outcomes significantly. Children who receive support early are more likely to develop healthy coping strategies, stronger relationships, and better long-term mental health.

If your GP or paediatrician determines your child is eligible, a Mental Health Treatment Plan can give them access to Medicare-subsidised sessions with a qualified mental health professional.

If you're worried about your child, a conversation with your GP or paediatrician is the right place to start.

You don't have to leave home to access professional mental health support.

Many Accredited Mental Health Social Workers offer telehealth sessions - which means you can attend from your lounge room, your car, or wherever feels comfortable.

Telehealth sessions under a Mental Health Care Plan are eligible for the same Medicare rebate as in-person sessions.

This matters especially for:
- People in regional or rural areas
- Parents with young children
- People with anxiety about attending in person
- Anyone with a busy schedule

Accessible support, wherever you are.

This one is for the parents.

The ones who are managing their child's big emotions while carrying their own. Who are googling "is this normal" at midnight. Who are trying to be patient when they're running on empty.

Parenting is hard. And sometimes the most useful thing isn't a parenting book - it's a professional who can sit with you and your family and help you understand what's happening.

A Mental Health Treatment Plan can cover subsidised support for you as a parent. And if your GP or paediatrician determines your child is eligible, it can cover support for them too.

You're allowed to ask for help.

Myth: You need to be in serious crisis before seeking mental health support.

Fact: You don't need a diagnosis to access a Mental Health Care Plan. You don't need to be at rock bottom.

Persistent stress, relationship difficulties, anxiety that's getting in the way, low mood that won't lift - these are all valid reasons to reach out.

Mental health support works best when accessed early. You don't wait until you have a broken leg before seeing a doctor - the same principle applies here.

If you're booking a GP appointment to discuss your mental health, here are a few things that can help:

Ask for a longer appointment (usually 20-30 mins) - tell reception it's for a Mental Health Care Plan

Write down what you've been experiencing - even a few dot points helps

Be honest about how long you've been feeling this way - your GP can only refer you based on what they know

Ask specifically: "Can I see an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker?"

Preparation makes the conversation easier - and gets you the right support faster.

An Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) is a social worker with specialist postgraduate training in mental health.

They're trained to assess and treat a wide range of mental health conditions - including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship difficulties, and more.

Their approach looks at the whole person: not just symptoms, but the relationships, life history, environment, and systems that shape mental health.

AMHSWs are registered with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and are approved providers under Medicare's Better Access scheme.

If you've been told there's a 3-month wait to see a mental health professional - you're not alone.

Many people across Australia are waiting far longer than they should to access support. That wait can feel defeating when you're already struggling.

What's worth knowing: wait times vary significantly between different types of mental health professionals.

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are approved Medicare providers, and many have capacity to see new clients sooner.

It's worth asking your GP specifically: "Who has availability now?"

Research shows nearly half of Australians who experience a mental health condition don't seek professional help.

The most common reasons?
- Not knowing where to start
- Cost concerns
- Long waitlists
- Stigma

A Mental Health Care Plan addresses three of those four barriers directly - it provides a starting point, reduces cost, and connects you with providers who may have availability sooner than you expect.

The fourth barrier - stigma - is something we can all help change.

Myth: Therapy is too expensive for most people.

Fact: With a GP Mental Health Care Plan, Medicare subsidises a significant portion of your session fee - making professional mental health support accessible to far more people than many realise.

The out-of-pocket gap varies by provider. Some Accredited Mental Health Social Workers have lower fees than psychologists, with comparable or shorter wait times.

Cost is a real barrier for many - but it's worth checking what's actually available before deciding it's out of reach.

Parents - did you know children and young people can also access Medicare-rebated mental health sessions?

If your GP or paediatrician determines your child is eligible, they can issue a Mental Health Treatment Plan - which gives your child access to subsidised sessions with a trained mental health professional.

Support may be available for children and adolescents experiencing:
- Persistent anxiety or school avoidance
- Emotional dysregulation
- Trauma responses
- Behavioural challenges
- Grief or family breakdown

If you're concerned about your child's mental health, a conversation with your GP or paediatrician is the right first step. Early support makes a meaningful difference.
