May is Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness about how Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder can impact many areas of health, including dental care.

Patients with EDS and HSD may experience jaw pain, TMJ dysfunction, headaches, neck discomfort, fatigue, increased sensitivity, and difficulty keeping their mouth open for extended periods during dental treatment. For some, even routine dental visits can be physically exhausting or uncomfortable.

At our practice, our dentists understand these challenges and aim to provide dental care that is gentle, supportive, and tailored to each patient’s individual needs. We help support patients through careful positioning in the dental chair, allowing extra breaks, providing jaw support where needed, and adapting appointments to improve comfort and reduce strain.

Ever wondered why your dentist always says “open wide”? 😄 It’s not just a catchphrase—it actually helps us do our best work!

Opening wide gives your dentist a clear view of all those tricky spots in your mouth, especially the back teeth where plaque loves to hide. It also helps us work more efficiently and safely, so we can give your teeth the thorough care they deserve.

That said… we know holding your mouth open for a while can make your jaw feel like it just finished a workout. 💪 That’s why we do things a little differently:

✨ We offer regular breaks during your appointment—just let us know when you need one!
✨ We use a bite block to gently support your jaw, so you don’t have to do all the work yourself
✨ We check in with you to make sure you’re comfortable the whole time

After your appointment, here are a few easy ways to care for your jaw:
🦷 Give it a rest—stick to softer foods if it feels tired
🦷 Try a warm compress to relax any tight muscles
🦷 Gently stretch your jaw by slowly opening and closing your mouth
🦷 Avoid chewing gum or really chewy foods for a few hours
