Yesterday 5 great-grandchildren were offered the opportunity to view their big Nanny’s body prior to her funeral service. All wanted to and surrounded by many adults in a gentle supported space they said their personal farewells.
During the funeral service I interviewed the children, who had each prepared one question that they wanted to answer in advance as their collective tribute. At the completion of the service some of the children placed some art with ‘Big Nanny’s’ coffin to stay with her. This was what they wanted to do in a child led process of goodbye. 🌈

One for the cemetery buffs! Waverley Cemetery is set on the cliff tops at Bronte in Sydney. Famously one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world and rich with history…. so obviously I was keen for a visit en route from Coogee to Bondi. 🙂
The list of famed Australian writers and poets who are laid to rest here (Henry Lawson, Dorothea Mackellar, Henry Kendall, Ethel Pedley), whose works I often use in funeral service caught my interest but really you could just visit for the spectacular views alone. Waverley is still an active burial site!

Last week created this beautiful cartoon for the to honour the life of Milla who we had celebrated the day prior with a service. A beautiful print will be made for her family to treasure and keep. Creativity is a gift for a grieving family.

I have learnt that when I sit down with a family to discuss how they will share the story of their loved one’s life I lean very heavily on the creative side of my brain. The story needs to be cohesive and engaging but also accurate. There is timing, music, presentation and tone to consider. Creativity is healing and helpful.

I had the privilege of hearing again about the work of in our Geelong community this morning. An incredible not-for-profit offering information, support and counselling to bereaved families. Congratulations on 40 years of care.

A lovely story about a beautiful family that I had the privilege of meeting earlier in the year and assisting with funeral care. Very inspirational people.

The husband of a local netballer who died suddenly of pancreatic cancer in March has revealed the two big things giving him strength to “find a way to fight”.

I have the privilege of working with many teams. Each day as I work alongside other funeral care providers, I learn from their vast skills, knowledge and creativity in providing beautiful care. Today it was Brad and Maxine from who have many years of wonderful industry experience. 🌸
