In Western individualistic cultures, the idea of doing study or work that fits our passion is very important. However it is worth considering that this maybe a cultural construct, and that for other collectivistic cultures, people are are more likely to see themselves as part of an interdependent network, often fulfilling obligations to others rather than focusing on their own interests, making personal passion not a great motivator. This has implications for coaching, and selection.
