I’m sure you saw all of the R U Okay Day posts this week. You might’ve sent your mates a message or two. You might not have. That’s okay
What’s not okay is the reality that plenty of people would’ve replied to those messages with a simple, “yeah mate, you?” irrespective of how they’re actually feeling.
Mental health is a constant in our lives. Poor mental health is unfortunately something that everyone has experienced, whether that’s firsthand, or through seeing someone they love being taken over by it.
The fact that poor mental health is a male-dominant issue is unsurprising, given how many of us have learnt through observation, or frank teachings how to be a man. Speaking about how we’re feeling isn’t second nature and for many it isn’t a skill that they’ve developed at all, even after decades of life. I don’t intend to dismiss any of the sufferings of females at all by this, but the statistics for mental health crisis’s are overwhelmingly male.
This November I’ll be back for another crack at another stupidly long run, to help raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health in the hope that we can get some men to speak up, and to give support to those who feel they can’t.
