🎄 Can:Do Hearing is beyond proud to introduce you to Morgan, the smiling face of the 2023 Can:Do 4Kids ‘Kids’mas appeal! ❤️ 🎁

Morgan is a confident, talkative six-year-old. She loves going to school, seeing her friends every day and even winning writing awards!

But it wasn’t always this way.

When Morgan was just one year old, her family made the life-changing move from Malaysia to Australia.

Just two months later, Morgan was diagnosed with permanent hearing loss.

Morgan's parents were told the news that she needed bilateral cochlear implants and to begin therapy as soon as possible to make sure she had the opportunity to learn to listen and speak.

As you can imagine, navigating a medical system for a condition you’re not familiar with in a new country was really challenging – and even scary.

‘Relief’, Yee, Morgan’s Mum said when she met Morgan’s Can:Do 4Kids therapist for the first time.

With early diagnosis and intervention, a child's spoken language abilities can often match those of their hearing peers.

‘Early intervention is especially important for infants and children who are deaf or hard of hearing, as the most critical time for the human brain to learn language is in the first three-and-a-half years of life.’ Tanya Cantwell, Client Services Team Manager at Can:Do 4Kids says.

‘Donations play a crucial role in bridging the gap, ensuring that all South Australian kids with hearing loss, whose families opt for developing listening and spoken language, gain immediate access to a certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist.’ She continued.

Today, Morgan is excelling at school and in life.

We wanted to share Morgan’s story and the Can:Do 4Kids Christmas appeal with you, as Can:Do Hearing directly supports Can:Do 4Kids and the work they do for South Australian Kids with hearing loss.

This Christmas, you can give the gift of listening and speaking to kids like Morgan, making sure all kids can access the opportunity to learn to listen and speak as early as possible.

WORKPLACE HEARING TIP

Whenever possible, minimise the duration of exposure to loud noise. Take regular breaks away from noisy environments to allow your ears to rest and recover. Even short periods of respite can significantly reduce the cumulative impact on your hearing.

Avoid using personal listening devices, such as headphones or earphones, at high volumes during breaks. Exposing your ears to excessive sound levels in leisure time can compound the damage caused by occupational noise.

Enjoy the sounds of nature instead.

Preserving your hearing health (from any age) is an investment in your future, allowing you to enjoy better communication, productivity, and overall quality of life.
