Meghan Powell Ashtanga Yoga

Meghan Powell Ashtanga Yoga Ashtanga Yoga classes, pranayama, & chanting with Meghan Powell in nipaluna/Hobart. Meghan has deepened her understanding of this tradition over the years.

MYSORE PRACTICE:
MON & THURS 6-8am
Hobart Breathing Space (13b Goulburn st) About Meghan:

Meghan had the good fortune of growing up within the yoga tradition. Her mom, Peg, being a long time practitioner, and first teacher, allowed Meghan the opportunity to come on and off the mat as often as she wanted from a young age. Over time, she developed her own passion for diving deep into the internal experiences of daily āsana, mantra, and meditation. As a student of her mentor and teacher, Dena Kingsberg, Meghan continues to cultivate a deeper appreciation and knowledge of classical Indian philosophy and a devotion for the profound, multi-faceted experience that is Ashtanga yoga. She finds herself lucky to teach alongside Peg Mulqueen, sharing the practice of yoga to students globally through Ashtanga Dispatch. As well as in her current home of Tasmania, where she teaches regular Ashtanga classes. You can also find her occasionally in Byron Bay, assisting her teacher.

Four years ago, life was very different.

Studios had shut down, classes were still cancelled or had moved online, and Tasmania’s borders hadn’t even opened to the mainland yet. It was the height of the pandemic. Mark and I had just moved from Byron Bay to Hobart—and we knew absolutely no one.

It was then I had the (brilliant? ridiculous?) idea to start an Ashtanga yoga community.

Four years ago this week, I began hosting in-person classes. During a pandemic. For a while there, I wasn’t even sure they would survive! Some of you might remember when it was just you in the room.

You know, most of the time I’m usually focused on what’s ahead—what’s next, what needs planning, listing out the future goals. Maybe you’re like that too.

But sometimes, it’s really nice to take a moment to look back at just how far we’ve come and celebrate what we’ve accomplished.

Because building a community from scratch? I didn’t quite grasp just how hard and how long it takes until I did it myself. You will need perseverance, devotion, and an unwavering sense of purpose.

Not too unlike a yoga practice, right?

And when I say what “we’ve accomplished” – I mean it.

It couldn’t have been done without you.

So—thank you.

If you’ve come to class, thank you.

If you’ve joined a retreat, sent a message, practiced online, or even just sent good vibes this way—thank you.

If you’re part of this Ashtanga Hobart community, happy anniversary! Celebrate what we’ve created over these four years. 🥳

And if you’re reading this from somewhere else in the world, what can you look back on and say, “Wow, I did that?” Amid obstacles, challenges, and failures—you really did.

So, what are you going to celebrate today?

Friends — Just a reminder that June 9th will be our last Mysore class together until the end of July while I visit family overseas.

The last class will not be teacher assisted, instead it will be an open practice. A chance to practice yoga, breathe together, and enjoy each other’s company before the long break.

If you have time, afterward we will go have a coffee/tea as a community.

Second Series Online Course begins this Saturday!

The Intermediate Series, called Nadi Shodhana, begins to work with purifying the channels in which prana flows throughout the subtle body and is the energetic complement to the forms found in the Primary Series.

Over the four sessions, we’ll go over every posture found in the series and discover different ways of approaching and adapting them, making them more accessible to our individual circumstances.

This is an interactive course, specifically designed with the home practitioner in mind, so bring your questions and curiosity!

You do not need to be practicing second series to join.

Recordings will be available.

Though they come in many forms, the teachings I’ve received from Dena and Jack over the years have remained the same…

What you nourish will grow. Reside in your hridaya. Remember the sweetness. Lean into joy. Be generous and sincere. Practice with devotion. Embrace your fullness. Love deeply. Nurture friendship. Live profoundly. Learn from nature. Eat good food.

Immense gratitude and love for my teachers.

—————————
May I nourish that which is eternal within me.
And may the eternal in me nourish the eternal everywhere. 🙏🏼🤍

I was asked by a curious student why people come to the yoga classes? Is it physical, mental, spiritual?…

Yes, yes, yes. Some people come to get closer to touching their toes; some people come to get closer to the Self, to God.

Some of the most spiritual moments have been those where I’ve actually simply felt what it is like to be in my own body. And to return there again and again.

I think there is no reason that is not good enough or big enough to begin. It does not need to be profound or enlightened. So, come. Come as you are. You only need a little bit of curiosity and a willingness to try.

“yes, yes,
that’s what I wanted,
I always wanted,
I always wanted,
to return
to the body
where I was born.”
— Allen Ginsberg

🙌🏼 Regular classes restart this week!

What is a “Mysore” practice?
✨ Mysore is a step-by-step method for learning Ashtanga yoga. Students are taught individually yet in a group setting. This allows you to learn the ashtanga sequence at your own natural pace, helping you build a regular, sustainable, and individualized practice.

✨ Or find me at on Tuesdays at 6:30am for a Heated Flow (Ashtanga Style 😉)! This class includes sun salutations, along with standing and seated postures from the Primary Series, offering a dynamic and well-rounded practice.

✨ Complete beginners and experienced practitioners are welcome to all classes.

DM with any questions.

See you in practice!
