Doctor Warren has dropped some pretty special news tonight.
NEWSFLASH
I have an announcement that is somewhat depressing but also a little exciting.
As of December 31st 2024 I will no longer be delivering babies.
It is depressing because I really do love to get to know everyone that comes to see me for their antenatal care. We go on a journey together that can sometimes be a little bumpy and scary but most of the time there’s a great outcome. For those where the ending isn’t so great, I help them deal with the aftermath. It really is an honour.
It is exciting because I will now get to go to bed not having to worry about the possibility of getting a phone call in the middle of the night and then possibly have to drag my weary body into the hospital. For those of you that were warned to not interrupt my beauty sleep (let’s face it I need all that I can get) and did anyway – I forgive you.
One of the first deliveries that I was present at was at Charleville Hospital in 1993. The mum sent me a letter and a photo several months later. As you can see in the photo – I had hair then!!! Since then, I’ve delivered many bubs (don’t ask me exactly how many – probably 2 to 3 thousand) and had to deal with the insanity that is the life of an obstetrician. But it’s not just me that’s had to deal with the craziness of obstetrics – my amazing wife and my kids have had to deal with it as well.
If I had my time over, would I choose that path again – Mmmmmmm, maybe not. Having said that, if I’d not decided to become an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist then I would never have met my wife on labour ward at Launceston General Hospital just over 20 years ago. And before you let your minds start dragging in the gutter – she was working as a midwife at the time!
I will continue to practice gynae and increase my workload in infertility. I will also see antenatal patients who are delivering at the Royal Hobart Hospital as public patients. So – don’t forget me!
I’d love to see photos of babies that I have delivered over the years and what they’re like now. Please post them in the comments.
Oh, and if anyone knows a Lauren who was born at Charleville Hospital in 1993 and who’s Dad at that time was a police officer at Quilpie Police Station – feel free to direct her to the post – that’s her that I’m holding.
