Nyrstar Australia - Hobart

Nyrstar Australia - Hobart The Hobart Zinc Works produces high-quality Australian zinc and other important products essential for a low carbon future.

Nyrstar is a well-known part of the Hobart landscape – we are located on the Derwent estuary and have been contributing to the community for over 100 years. We are one of the world’s largest producing zinc smelters and our products are exported to global markets. We have a team of around 600 people (both direct and contract employees) and are a major contributor to Tasmania’s economy. Our priority

for our site is to provide a safe environment that puts our people first. We are proud of the progressive and innovative approach we are taking to achieve this. The strong relationship the smelter has with our community has been developed over many years and continues today, through community meetings, sponsorships, partnerships and active participation in the community. We are one of the world’s largest zinc smelters in terms of production volume. We produce zinc from concentrate: special high grade (SHG), zinc galvanising alloys, and zinc die casting alloys are all produced from our zinc smelting process. We convert the raw material into zinc metal for use in numerous end-use applications. Zinc provides excellent corrosion resistance to iron and steel. It is also a relatively hard metal with a low melting point, making it suitable for die casting, but still soft enough to be formed, rolled, or extruded. Zinc can be found in everything from construction and infrastructure to transport and industrial machinery, from communications to electronics, and from consumer products to human health.

Tasmanians understand the importance of industries that anchor our communities. That’s why ensuring the Hobart Zinc Works can navigate through one of the most important moments in its history, is paramount.

The Hobart smelter has been a bedrock of Tasmania’s economy for over a century. It’s more than part of our landscape. It’s more than just a zinc processing facility. It’s a provider of livelihoods, a customer for over 300 local suppliers, and an enduring contributor to Tasmania’s industrial capability. Last year alone, the site generated over $500 million in value for the state and supported more than 560 full-time equivalent jobs.

Today this pillar of Tasmanian industry faces a challenge. Global industrial dynamics are shifting. International competitors are reshaping the economics of metals refining and in turn a centrepiece of our economy. These changes are putting enormous pressure on Australian smelters around the country and, without action, could risk the long-term viability of our nation’s domestic processing capacity.

But with many challenges therein lies an opportunity. Hobart has the potential to become a centre of excellence for the production of critical metals. We have the opportunity to supply products like germanium and indium that are essential to modern life. While our zinc has been used in protecting the corrosion of infrastructure, in pharmaceuticals essential for healthy lives and in renewable energy technology, Hobart could become integral in the production of the technologies we deem essential for the next generation. From semiconductors to solar cells, and from fibre optics to defence technologies. We already produce many critical metals as by-products of our refining process, but with the right investment and government backing, we could dramatically scale this up and supply these high-value materials to Australia and our allies for generations to come. And we will be making things using renewable energy, perhaps an often understated advantage of our state.

Over the past year, Nyrstar has been working to help secure a more sustainable future for our operations. We’ve been working hand-in-hand with both the Tasmanian and Australian Governments to develop a pathway forward. I want to thank both sides of politics in Tasmania for their strong bipartisan support of our industry and their commitment to helping us navigate this moment. Their recognition of the strategic and economic importance of what we do cannot be overstated.

We continue to hold constructive discussions with the Federal Government as well, and I’m optimistic that with coordinated support, we can ensure Hobart plays a foundational role in the next era of critical metals processing.

This isn’t just about saving a smelter. It’s about building a sovereign capability for Australia, ensuring the metals we need for modern economies are available, and in doing so creating new opportunities for future Tasmanians. Our goal is to put Hobart at the forefront of a growing global industry.

Tasmania today has the capability, the foundational infrastructure, the skills, the history, and now the chance to lead. With collaboration, vision, and commitment, we can secure this once-in-a-generation opportunity and ensure that Hobart’s smelter continues not just to survive, but to thrive.

On Friday we braved the winter chill, rocked our favourite shorts, and came together for Speak Up! Stay ChaTY’s Shorts Day🩳❄️

Shorts Day isn’t just about the laughs and the fashion—it’s about starting important conversations, breaking down the stigma around mental health, and showing our commitment to supporting one another. Together, we proved that even the smallest actions, like wearing shorts on a cold day and sharing a bite to eat, can spark change and bring our community closer.

A huge shoutout to our breakfast BBQ crew who ignored the cold and dark to help raise awareness about mental health. Who says you can’t wear shorts in the middle of winter?

A Nyrstar-commissioned report published by economic researchers, Mandala and released today details the risk to Australia’s ambition of becoming a leading exporter of critical minerals as a result of the threat posed to the nation’s lead and zinc refining capabilities.

Refining important base metals like lead and zinc is an essential precursor to unlocking critical minerals – Antimony, Bismuth, Tellurium, Germanium and Indium - that are vital for defence, clean energy, transport and advanced manufacturing.

Last week, Nyrstar Hobart was delighted to host a group of students from the of School of Natural Sciences, UTAS. 😀

While on-site, students listened to a lecture by Alex Lovibond, Senior Environmental Advisor focused on hydrogeology - how it applies to the work we do on site in terms of mapping groundwater contamination and the projects being implemented to mitigate the impact of that contamination. After the lecture Alex and Roland Gordon-Lawrence, Graduate Environmental Scientist took the group on a tour of the site which included the opportunity for firsthand experience using some of our monitoring equipment.

It was a pleasure to share our knowledge and highlight the ongoing environmental protection efforts on-site with such an engaged bunch of students and we wish them every success as they continue their studies.

We had the pleasure of welcoming back to site Tash Riddoch to help us mark International Women’s Day. Tash ticked off several firsts during her time in zinc - first ever female apprentice fitter and turner and first female maintenance team leader. After 14 years at our Hobart smelter, Tash went on to hold many leadership roles in the electricity sector before moving into consulting and opening a gin distillery!

Reflecting on her success, Tash said that being open to opportunities and ideas, building strong working relationships grounded in respect and speaking up when you have a different view, are all things she has remained true to.

Thank you, Tash for sharing your journey which highlights your extraordinary strength, determination and resilience and helping us reflect on the effort that’s required to build a society that is equal, welcoming, and empowering for all women.
