Experience the Port of Hobart on an Accessible River Cruise! 🛥️

Join TasPorts on a specially designed accessible edition of the “Tour with TasPorts” river cruise - created to make the experience clearer, calmer, and more enjoyable.

This isn’t just a cruise. It’s a guided journey into how Tasmania’s working port operates, brought to life through detailed storytelling and audio description friendly commentary.

The accessible session takes place on Monday 9 February, from 10:30am to 11:30am.

What makes this session ideal for people with vision impairment?
• A reduced capacity session: Fewer people on board means a quieter environment, easier navigation, and more time for the guide to provide clear spoken explanations
• A guide who shares rich, descriptive storytelling: You’ll hear in-depth explanations about the sights, machinery, vessels, and operations happening around you, helping you visualise the action
• Wheelchair, walker, and mobility aid friendly vessel: If you use mobility support, the vessel offers smooth, accessible movement with fewer obstacles and more space.
• Auslan interpreter: For guests who are Deafblind, the interpreter will be positioned to ensure maximum access
• Support person access: Companion Cards are accepted, making it easier to bring someone who can assist as needed.

Come along for a supportive, inclusive journey on the River Derwent, designed so everyone can experience Tasmania’s waterfront in their own way.

“People like you have given me possibility, and I will never be able to thank you enough.”

Phil has been blind since he was six, after losing his sight to Retinoblastoma. Yet over more than five decades, he’s built an incredible life filled with independence, confidence and community connection - thanks to the support of VisAbility and Guide Dogs Tasmania.

And the everyday moments with Dudley say so much.

Whether they’re crossing the finish line in local fun runs and community walks, or stepping out onto the blind cricket field together, Dudley is right by Phil’s side - calm, capable and part of a much bigger support system.

Behind every achievement are the services that have supported Phil for more than 45 years:
• Orientation and Mobility training
• Assistive Technology skills
• Daily living support
• Workplace tools
• and much more!

These are the services that have helped Phil thrive, long before a dog harness ever went on, and in every stage of life since.

Phil is living proof of the power of your support and kindness. There are so many more Tasmanians who need the freedom and independence Phil enjoys today with support from VisAbility and Guide Dogs Tasmania.

This is your final chance to help someone like Phil access life‑changing services through VisAbility and Guide Dogs Tasmania.

Help Shape the Future of Digital Accessibility!

We’re proud to partner with Intopia, who are seeking input for their Assistive Technology Survey 2025 – the most comprehensive study in Australia and New Zealand on how assistive tech is used online.

If you’re 18+ and use assistive technology or adjust device settings to navigate the web, your voice matters! This survey explores real experiences, emerging trends (including AI), and helps influence better design, policy, and accessibility innovation.

The survey is accessible, anonymous, and open until 6 February 2026.

Your participation will help build a more inclusive and equitable digital future for everyone.

As we celebrate World Braille Day today, we want to give a shout out to one of our amazing Volunteers who has done so much in our Braille team.

Over the past 25 years, Carol Grace has made a huge contribution to our Braille book collection by manually typing in the Braille, word-for-word, to transcribe novels and books.

She also transcribes Braille music for clients and any other special requests. This year alone, Carol has transcribed four novels and five music pieces. This has added up to about 1400 braille pages, spending at least 10 hours per week.

Although we cannot confirm the exact number of pages she has brailled in her work with us, we estimate that the number of pages brailled over the 25 years must be at least 35,000 - an astonishing effort! Plus she does this work remotely.

At our recent Volunteer Thank You events in December, we were able to recognise Carol for her 25 years of service. Thanks for everything that you do Carol.

World Braille Day is annually celebrated on January 4, the birthday of Braille inventor, Louis Braille. The day recognizes the contributions of Louis Braille in helping blind and visually impaired people to read and write.

Braille is a code that uses bumps and indentation on a surface to represent letters, which can be recognized by touch. Louis Braille’s code is arranged in small rectangular blocks called cells with raised dots in a 3 x 2 pattern. Each cell represented a letter, number or punctuation.

At VisAbility in WA, we provide individual and group Braille training. Our Braille classes are run on demand throughout the year by a certified Braille Instructor.

To find out more about this service please visit our website: www.visability.com.au/services/training-workshops/braille-classes/ or contact our team on 1800 847 466.

Today is National Pet Travel Safety Day which raises awareness about the risks pets face during car journeys and other forms of travel.

As part of this awareness, we wanted to share with you some exciting news that Uber has created a new feature for users who are travelling with an assistance animal.

Riders can self-identify as travelling with an assistance animal through the Accessibility setting in the Uber app, which unlocks features designed to enhance their experience, including:

*The option for riders to disclose to the driver that they are traveling with an assistance animal at pickup, so the driver knows how to best support them

*Ongoing monitoring of driver cancellations and proactive support messages from Uber to check in with the rider and offer support if needed

*Access to Uber’s dedicated customer service team via phone, available 24/7

*On-trip reminders to drivers about their legal obligation to accept riders with an assistance animal.

To find out how to set this feature up on the Uber app, visit the blog below :
