Wild Light – an exhibition with audio description. 🔉

Wild Light is a solo exhibition by Tasmanian designer Duncan Meerding Design, currently showing at the Cradle Mountain Hotel Wilderness Gallery until the end of May. What makes this exhibition particularly exciting is the audio description, created to support visitors living with low or no vision to engage more fully with the work.

The audio description can be accessed online via the link below, or listened to in person at the gallery. Duncan has shared that this audio component will remain available beyond the exhibition dates, allowing people to experience Wild Light in their own time and from home if visiting isn’t possible.

Duncan’s work draws on the hidden wild of nature, using light and material to create calm, reflective spaces. The audio description thoughtfully guides listeners through the exhibition, focusing on form, atmosphere, and the feeling of light in the landscape.

As we wrap up Low Vision Awareness Month, we asked our staff to share their personal insights, the purpose behind everyday features they’d never questioned before....

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed the purpose of the bumps (tactile markers) on footpaths at road crossings.”

Those raised dots aren’t decorative - they’re information you can feel. They help people identify key points like crossing locations and changes in the environment.

Our Orientation & Mobility specialists teach people how to use cues like these to travel safely and confidently, using practical strategies tailored to the person and the places they move through every day.

Did you know that our Resource Centre sells the revolutionary Meta Glasses? Here's our Assistive Tech expert, Jordan, modelling them. 😎

If you’re interested in using wearable technology to support everyday independence, our team is here to help.

This game-changing piece of technology can assist with reading signs, recognising faces, taking hands‑free photos, and getting spoken information when you need it. They’re a great option for people living with vision impairment who want simple, quick access to information.

Our Orientation & Mobility specialists can also show you how to use the glasses safely and confidently in your daily routines - at home, at work, or when travelling.

It’s Low Vision Awareness Month, and this February, we’re paying closer attention to the environment around us.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights, the everyday obstacles they didn’t notice until working at VisAbility.

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed how many people park blocking the footpath in residential areas, and how challenging this can make it for people with low or no vision.”

A car across a footpath might feel minor, but it can force someone into the road or into unexpected hazards. Keeping pathways clear helps everyone travel safely.

If you want one simple way to make your street safer:
• Keep footpaths clear
• Leave room at curb ramps and crossings
• Remember the footpath is someone’s route and not a spare parking bay

Small choices. Big safety impact.

It’s Low Vision Awareness Month, and this February, we’re highlighting how information is presented.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights and the barriers they didn’t see until they started working at VisAbility.

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed that so much of the world assumes everyone can access information visually.”

Tiny text. PDFs that won’t read properly on screen readers. Important details shown only in charts, colours, or images.

Access should never be an afterthought, especially when it's information people need to live, learn, work, and connect.

Did you know that our Accessible Information Services team helps convert content into formats that people can actually use, including accessible documents and alternative formats?

It’s Low Vision Awareness Month, and this February, we’re highlighting the way we communicate.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights, the habits they didn’t realise they had until they worked closely with people with low or no vision...

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed how often people point, or say ‘over there,’ instead of giving clear verbal directions.”

It’s so automatic, until you realise how many people it leaves out.

A small swap makes a big difference:
• “Two steps to your left”
• “It’s on the table in front of you, near the edge”
• “The doorway is at 2 o’clock”

What’s something you never noticed before learning about low vision?

It’s Low Vision Awareness Month, and this February, we’re highlighting tools that support independence.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights, the things they didn’t know before joining VisAbility and working with people with low or no vision.

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed that an air fryer could talk to me.”

Talking appliances aren’t novelty gadgets. For many people living with low or no vision, features like voice prompts, tactile buttons, and accessible displays make everyday tasks safer and more achievable.

Our Assistive Technology team helps people explore tools just like this, including accessible products available through our Resource Centre.

Want to learn more about Assistive Technology and how it can support independence? Head to: https://www.visabilitytas.com.au/services/therapies/assistive-technology-options/
