The current staffing situation in Tasmania’s public hospitals is not sustainable. It is impacting the wellbeing and safety of nurses and midwives and putting increasing pressure on the health system.
This isn’t just a workforce issue; it’s about the safety of our community.
Tasmania’s nurses and midwives need real action to improve staffing and conditions.

The pressure on Tasmania’s public hospitals is real.
Nurses and midwives see it every shift.
This report highlights why workforce and safe staffing matters.

Australia’s public hospitals are the backbone of our health system. They are where Australians turn in moments of crisis and vulnerability. But year after year, the Australian Medical Association (AMA) Public Hospital Report Card shows a system under.
Tasmania’s public hospitals are under sustained, backbreaking pressure and the latest results confirm what doctors and patients experience every day.
Performance has declined across every key measure, with emergency departments again the worst‑performing nationally and surgery waits continuing to grow. This is not a short‑term dip. It reflects a system operating beyond capacity, without the workforce, infrastructure or long‑term planning needed to meet demand.
Funding increases are welcome, but money alone will not fix this. Without tackling access block, workforce shortages and delayed discharges, patient flow will not improve. Real reform, deliberate long‑term planning and clinically led solutions are essential.
As nurses and midwives, you are dedicated to protecting your patients every single shift.
Who’s protecting you?
Demand is rising. Acuity is rising. Exhaustion is real. And without safe staffing and real support from the Tasmanian government, the system does not hold.
If you want change, now is the time to stand up!

Thank you to Rebecca White MP and Bridget Archer MP for taking the time to meet and discuss the future of residents and staff at Rosary Gardens with ANMF officials, delegates and COTA representatives.
These conversations are an important step toward finding solutions that protect the people who call Rosary Gardens home and the dedicated nurses and carers who support them every day.
Our members have been clear about what is at stake continuity of care for residents and safe, secure workplaces for staff.
We welcome the willingness of leaders to engage on this issue and work constructively toward practical outcomes for the community.
The ANMF will continue to stand with our members and advocate for solutions that ensure residents, staff and families are supported now and into the future.
