The ANMF Tasmanian Branch was proud to stand in solidarity at today’s May Day Parade in Hobart.

May Day is a powerful reminder of the collective strength of workers and unions in advancing fair pay, safe workplaces and respect for all. Together with union members, families and supporters, we marched to recognise the ongoing contribution of working people and the importance of standing united.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and continues to support the work we do for nurses, midwives and care workers.

As public sector negotiations continue, we’re speaking with members about the changes needed to improve their workplaces and strengthen the profession.

Yannick, an Enrolled Nurse and ANMF member, shared his experience of staffing pressures in his ward and the impact this has on safety for both patients and staff.

His message is clear: safe staffing levels are essential to delivering safe, high-quality care.

We thank Yannick, and all members contributing their voices, for ensuring the realities of the workplace are represented in these negotiations.

Woman-centred midwifery care brings proven benefits for families, babies, and the wider community.

Right now, in Tasmania, midwives are struggling to meet the needs of the mothers and babies in their care due to critical understaffing. This puts pressure on staff and impacts the quality and safety of care.

Midwives are calling on the Tasmanian Government to take immediate action so they can continue delivering the high standard of care families deserve, and do their jobs safely.

Add your voice and support their call for change.

Our voice at the EBA26 table is shaped by lived experience.

ANMF negotiators are nurses and midwives who understand the realities of the profession, because they’ve worked in it.

Every claim, every discussion, every outcome is grounded in the knowledge of what it takes to deliver safe, high-quality care.

This is what it means to be professionals representing professionals.

A Public Sector Enterprise Agreement negotiation update from proud ANMF members, nurses and staff who are part of the ANMF negotiation team

28/04/2026

As public sector negotiations continue this week, we’re speaking with members about the changes they want to see to improve their workplaces and strengthen the nursing and midwifery profession in Tasmania.

We heard from Shakira and Julia, Registered Nurses and ANMF Delegates, about the importance of improved reproductive leave and increased maternity leave entitlements.

They spoke to how meaningful improvements in these areas would better support the nursing workforce and help ensure nurses and midwives are supported both at work and at home.

Thank you to Shakira, Julia, and all members continuing to share their voices as part of these negotiations.

Today, on International Workers’ Memorial Day, we stand in remembrance of those who have lost their lives at work, and those whose lives have been forever changed by workplace injury.

In Tasmania, we invite members to gather today at 12:30pm at the Workers' Commemorative Park in Launceston, alongside the broader union movement, to honour these workers and renew our shared commitment to safer workplaces.

Today, we reflect and we recommit. Because every worker deserves to be safe at work and return home at the end of the day.

Today, on International Workers’ Memorial Day, we pause to remember those who have lost their lives at work.

It’s a powerful reminder that occupational health and safety (OHS) is essential, not optional.

We honour those we’ve lost by continuing to fight for safer workplaces, because every worker deserves to go home safe.

For nurses, midwives and care workers, OHS is about more than physical safety — it’s about safe staffing, manageable workloads, protection from violence, and support for psychological wellbeing.

Together, we keep pushing for the protections every worker deserves.

Today we remember the lives lost and those forever changed by the Port Arthur tragedy.

As the ANMF Tasmanian Branch, we acknowledge the profound impact this event has had on our community and on our members, nurses and frontline workers who continue to carry its impact in their care, compassion, and resilience.

We honour the victims, support those still affected, and recognise the strength of all who responded in the face of unimaginable circumstances.

Our thoughts remain with the individuals, families, and communities who continue to heal.

Felicity, a midwife and ANMF member, is deeply concerned about the future of families, the midwifery workforce, and the profession in Tasmania if urgent action isn’t taken.

The ANMF are standing with midwives at the RHH who are advocating for the support they need to provide safe, high-quality care for mothers and babies.
Their requests are clear and necessary:

-A 10% increase in midwife staffing to meet current demand
-The use of up to 10 experienced agency midwives to support safe staffing levels
-A commitment from the Minister for Health to meet with midwives and the ANMF to develop long-term solutions

You can help support Tasmania’s midwives, families, and babies.
