💪 The ANMF stands in solidarity with Public Sector Unions taking action for fair pay and better conditions.

Nurses and midwives will continue focusing on delivering safe clinical care but won’t take on extra duties that lessen the impact of others’ industrial action.

This situation lies with the Tasmanian Government. It’s time to come to the table, negotiate fairly, and deliver certainty and respect for all public sector workers (not more short-term fixes).

CPSU members alongside other public sector union members will take industrial action, which includes statewide stop-work meetings in the last week of October.

It comes after a resounding rejection of the Rockliff government’s 12 month “first and final” rollover offer of 3%, with no improved conditions.

Community and Public Sector Union general secretary Thirza White told The Mercury Newspaper: “Our members have voted decisively to take action, and that is because of a failure of Premier Jeremy Rockliff to sit down and negotiate in good faith a new agreement.”

It’s time for the Rockliff government to Bridge the Gap with an offer that respects the critical role public sector workers play in delivering services and helps attract and retain skilled workers in Tasmania.

Superannuation is finally being paid on the Commonwealth Paid Parental Leave! After 13+ years of advocacy, the Paid Parental Leave Amendment Bill 2024 has passed - a huge win for women’s financial security in retirement.

With women taking 86% of paid primary carer leave, this change helps close the gender super gap and ensures your super keeps growing as your family grows. For HESTA members, this could mean an extra $6,500 per child at retirement. It’s a long-overdue step toward a fairer and more inclusive super system.

After continued ANMF advocacy, the Tasmanian Health Service (THS) has finally agreed to staff the Mersey Community Hospital Emergency Department to minimum safe levels, with an increase of 7.77 FTE, positions that should have been implemented 12 months ago.

The THS has advised that these staffing levels will be met using casual pool staff, part-time increases, and fixed-term contracts while recruitment is underway. Any positions that can’t be filled will be backfilled with agency staff.

We hope these measures provide some much-needed relief for MCH ED members.

The ANMF will continue to monitor progress and advocate to the Government for long-term solutions to address ongoing access and flow block across our hospitals.

The University of Tasmania will be able to train midwives locally from next year with the graduate diploma of midwifery to be reinstated from June 2026.

That’s a wrap… Here’s a (very quick!) look at last week's Acute Care Conference...

Speakers presented on diverse elements of the acute care health system such as Neurodiversity Screening Tools for Paediatric Patients, Hard-to-Heal Wounds and Wound Hygiene, Voluntary Assisted Dying, Navigating Acute Care for people with Dementia, and Precipitous Birth Management in the Emergency Department.

We also heard from event sponsors, took part in engaging Q+A’s, learned during hands-on sessions and group discussions, and enjoyed meeting other healthcare professionals from across the state during the breaks.

Thanks again to staff, attendees, speakers, and our sponsors for making the day a success!

When it comes to Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) and Public Liability Cover, you get what you pay for!

While other representative organisations may promote insurance policies with a higher individual claim limit, the ANMF’s $50 million annual total coverage provides significantly greater protection.

Why does this matter? You work in environments where multiple claims can occur, so it is vital that your professional protection covers you should you need it.

Get with one of the most comprehensive and trusted PII policies available for nurses, midwives and care workers in Australia today https://tinyurl.com/anmfpii

Great news for Endorsed Private Practice Midwives (EPPMs)! The ANMF Tasmanian and Victorian Branches are now offering professional indemnity insurance as part of membership - a first for any union in Australia. This is a major win for EPPMs, especially those starting their own practice, with significant cost savings and no 'run-off' insurance required when membership ends.

In addition to insurance, members gain access to expert support for Ahpra notifications, workplace issues, WHS concerns, and more. If you’re an EPPM looking for support that truly understands your practice - get in touch. We’re here for you.

⚠️ The Clinical Trials Unit at the RHH is under threat.

For many Tasmanians battling cancer, treatment using a trial in the Unit may be their last chance at life-changing treatment, but without co-funding, it won’t survive.
