MAKING A NOISE THAT CAN’T BE IGNORED: we will keep sounding the alarm alongside our members for Tasmanians with rare and advanced cancers now at risk of losing what can be the last option for treatment.

Celebrating Strength in Solidarity – May Day 2025
On May Day, the ANMF proudly stood with unionists across Tasmania to honour workers’ rights and celebrate collective wins.
Special shout-out to our delegate, Dave Allchin (LGH), nominated for Delegate of the Year, recognised for his dedication to members.
Despite the parade being cancelled, spirits stayed strong at the recovery BBQ, where union families gathered and stood in solidarity with Tolosa Street mental health workers.
Union wins don’t happen by chance—they happen when we stand together.
ANMF members at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) have taken action today in response to a proposed 58% cut to staffing in the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit (CCTU).
These cuts pose a serious risk to patient safety, threaten access to life-extending treatments, and jeopardise both current and future clinical trials.
We are calling on the Government to maintain existing staffing levels and work collaboratively with frontline staff to safeguard the future of cancer care in Tasmania.

Tasmania’s health system is in crisis and today's election is critical.
Yesterday, ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd spoke on ABC Breakfast TV about the deep cracks in our healthcare system.
Nurses, midwives and care workers are stretched to the limit and Tasmanians are paying the price. We need leadership that prioritises health.
That’s why it’s imperative voters support politicians who have given 100% commitment to the ANMF’s Key Asks. This election is about choosing a healthier future for our workforce, our loved ones, and our community.

ANMF Organisers Shane and Kristy called by the LGH ICU this evening to check in, as they too have experienced their own challenges this week with staffing.
The ANMF is meeting with LGH senior management next week to discuss the current Step 2 grievances at the LGH.
This will include the ICU and the need to secure the benchmarked FTE and clinical coaches that will come with this increase in FTE.

ONGOING UNMITIGATED CRITICAL CAPACITY AT LGH ED
At the request of members ANMF organisers urgently attended the LGH ED today and observed the following:
• 4 nurses short
• 2 simultaneous Code Black events and 1 Code Grey
• Transfer of Care delays exceeding 2 hours
• No resus bays available for most of the morning
• Over 30 patients in the waiting room, 8 patients moved back to the waiting from the department.
• 18 patients waiting for ward beds
• ED Airlock is now commonly used to create 4 additional bed spaces, with no additional nursing resource
• Diluted senior skill mix
• Staff being punished for Transfer of Care delays
• Uncertainty regarding the ability to staff safely over the weekend
This is not a one-off, this has been ongoing for 12 months since ANMF first reported such critical demands and commenced the code yellow campaign. The entire week has been marked by extreme capacity pressures, and Critical Capacity Alerts (CCAs) are being called daily at the LGH.
The ANMF is calling on the next Tasmanian Government to take decisive action and address the LGH critical capacity crisis. To do this within its first 100 days in office, ANMF is calling on a commitment to:
• A commitment to fix hospital gridlock – resource transfer of care workload in ED,
• Statewide access and flow strategy, including urgent consideration to a demountable ward at the LGH to immediately increase bed capacity.
• Ratios to be implemented and to be legislated
• Babies to be counted in midwifery staffing model
• Tasmanian Nurses & Midwives to be paid the highest in the country
• ANUMs/AMUMs to be indirect
• Clinical Coaches to be indirect
ANMF organisers are still on the ground seeking clarification of solutions and will provide further updates as they come to hand.
Want to help make Tasmanian Hospitals safe?
Your vote matters, use it to support a stronger, safer health system.
In 2023, the Liberals promised Nurse-to-Patient Ratios.
They broke that promise.
Now they won’t commit at all.
Tasmanian nurses and patients deserve better.
Vote for legislated, enforceable Nurse-to-Patient Ratios.
✅ Labor and Greens have made a full commitment.
❌ Liberals have walked away.
