Mental Health & Resilience in Aged Care
The Aged Care Royal Commission made one thing clear: quality care depends on a supported workforce.
For many nurses and care workers, aged care means long shifts, chronic understaffing, emotional strain and burnout, with limited access to mental health support. This isn’t just a workforce issue, it’s a patient safety issue.
The ANMF continues to push for:
✔️ Safe staffing and skill mix
✔️ Mental health support in workplaces
✔️ Fair pay and recognition for emotional labour
The roadmap is there. Now it’s time to make it real.
Your voice matters. When we speak up together, change happens.
The ANMF welcomes the increased Federal funding and expects the Tasmanian Government to use the additional $700 million to strengthen staffing and resourcing across the health system, improving safety for patients and staff.

Today, Emily Shepherd, ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary, and ANMF member Kylie spoke to the media about serious concerns regarding a makeshift obstetric emergency theatre operating in a recovery room at LGH. These unacceptable conditions raise significant risks to infection control, patient dignity and staff safety. Planned capital works must not result in unsafe contingency plans. Women, babies and staff deserve better.
The Health Minister must intervene to ensure a proper theatre is available for obstetric emergencies.
ANMF members are encouraged to report safety concerns and issues impacting their work to the ANMF, where our Member Support team is available to provide advice, advocacy and assistance.

Building Skills in Critical Care
In the latest Infusion, Karla, an ANMF Educational Recipient, shares her experience attending The Alfred ICU & VECMOS Adult ECMO Course in Melbourne - an intensive two-day program combining theory, real case discussions, and hands-on simulation.
From understanding VV and VA ECMO to practicing circuit priming, cannulation and emergency troubleshooting, the course reinforced the importance of early recognition, teamwork, and calm decision-making in high-stakes critical care.
A valuable experience that strengthened both technical skills and appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration, lessons that will directly support safer care for critically ill patients.
Today the ANMF and COTA Tasmania met with Federal Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Rebecca White to raise urgent concerns about the loss of 94 aged care beds at Rosary Gardens.
Importantly, Minister White has agreed to invite key stakeholders to the table for further discussions. This is a critical step and with it comes real responsibility.
Older Tasmanians, aged care workers, families and the wider community will feel the impact if solutions aren’t delivered. The expectation is clear: transparency, accountability and a clear plan to protect residents, staff and aged care capacity in Tasmania.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) Tasmanian Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd spoke to the media about the loss of nearly 100 aged care beds when the Rosary Gardens Aged Care facility closes in June.
Ms Shepherd said there are certainly a growing cohort that will continue to need aged care homes that can only be provided in a residential setting. We know some people can be waiting for their preferred facility up to a year at times.
The ANMF has written to the federal government to seek a solution.
