This recent article about eco anxiety from The Conversation is on my mind. Two thirds of the over 1000 people surveyed say they feel anxiety about planetary degredation.

Eco-anxiety is an understandable response to the many crises the world faces. Here are four ways to help you cope.

Reading Phosphorescence while travelling through Central Australia. Julia Baird writes about looking for the moments of awe and wonder everyday. Looking at expansive night sky in the desert, learning dreaming creation of country and geological history of the inland sea has been amazing.

YOGA OFF THE MAT

Watching the scenes of Kabul airport over the past few days has had me in tears.

I feel the fear and desperation of the Afghani people in my body.

I can’t look away.

I can’t pretend it’s not happening.

Yoga isn’t just a personal practice to get fit or flexible.

Yoga applies off the mat.

“ As meditation deepens and self-will becomes less, we come to regard everyone as our own; if they have problems, it is our privilege to live for helping them to solve those problems. When at last we regard the entire world as our family, we will be enabled to draw upon the vast reservoir of love and wisdom lying unsuspected in all of us.” Eknath Easwaran

I think any woman or woman aligned person would understand the existential fear that Afghans, especially women and girls are feeling right now.

If you’re feeling it too, here’s what you can do.

Firstly, it’s important to feel our feelings, even if the source is from across the globe.

Find a way to express and release your anger, rage, grief and fear.

Move your body, punch a pillow, cry or yell at the terror of this humanitarian crisis.

Then once we’ve cleared our own energy we can act. Not from a place of chaotic emotion but from a place of channeled purpose.

The upside of anger is that it inspires action.

The upside of grief is that it clarifies what’s important to us.

The upside of fear is that it increases focus and awareness.

If you feel inspired to channel your emotions into something positive, here’s what you can do:

Write to the Immigration Minister the Hon. Alex Hawke MP and request that Australia increases its refugee intake on humanitarian grounds.

Write to the Minister for Women and Minister for Foreign Affairs the Hon. Marise Payne MP and request that Australia increase its refugee intake on humanitarian grounds.

Take some action in solidarity with the Wangan and Jangalingou people who are fighting the Adani mine on their country.

Today we have written to the Minister for the Environment to call for an immediate stop work order on construction of the Carmichael mine.

We have asked her to intervene and support our human rights by ensuring that our lands and waters, and our sacred Doongmabulla Springs, are protected from Adani.

You can help strengthen our demands: https://bit.ly/3wS5Tmf

I just used the online form to write a message to Scott Morrison. I am so appalled at his response to national call out of men's violence against women. It seems every action he takes further indicates how absolutely intentionally oblivious he is.

You can also send a message here: https://www.pm.gov.au/contact-your-pm

I really wanted to email so I could also copy in Tanya Plibersek, Larissa Waters and Rebekha Sharkie who strongly and publicly drawn attention to the inadequacy of Scott Morrison response. It seems that even the process of communicating with the Prime Minister is not transparent, even when you want it to be...

These past several months (while also helping to stop a coup) we’ve burned the midnight oil building an online toolbox that will better serve our global community. And today it goes live!

This effort really began ten years ago, when the first edition of Beautiful Trouble was released into the world. Since then the project has criss-crossed the world, spawned sequels and a card deck, trained 15,000 people, and more.

And now, at last (finally!), all the best tools from our books — sourced from 200+ frontline activists around the world — are now online, free, and available in five languages!
